Short Summary

• I'm Jim Bennett, producer, host and engineer  of a live jazz performance series on KCSM in San Mateo, known as In The Moment, which airs now on Thursday nights at 9PM PST, and you can listen online at http://kcsm.org. KCSM is a public radio station, and one of the few 24 hour jazz stations left in the country. I have been doing this show in the bay area for over seven years, largely without funding. It is the only show of it's kind here and it features many locally based musicians and younger players, often getting their first chance to record, or to be broadcast. I have been in public radio here mostly as a production and recording engineer engineer for over thirty years, and many of them at KPFA. I have recorded and broadcast hundreds of concerts featuring music of all types, and have been very active as a trainer in several youth programs and KPFA's Apprenticeship program. • My fundraising campaign at a basic level, helps raise funds for a 2 CD set of In The Moment live performance, which will be produced at no cost to KCSM, so that they may use the cd in upcoming KCSM fundraisers. It should also allow me to continue doing the radio program throught 2014, since I am unfunded through any grant currently. I believe strongly in recording live music as a way of promoting musicians and strengthening music community, which is why I wanted to do more than just a single project (even if it is a double CD). It means alot to me to support local musicians, and to insure that their are younger engineers who get the opportunity to document the music. To this end, I decided to also include a concert featuring an artist who has been on In The Moment several times. On December 13th at 8PM, at Piedmont Piano Company in Oakland, (http://piedmontpiano.com) we presented pianist Myra Melford, who played solo piano and featured music from her new CD, Life Carries Me This Way, on Firehouse 12 Records. Attending the concert resulted in the profits going to this fundraising campaign. I'm glad to say that, while placing the emphasis on supporting Myra and giving her a venue to perform material from her CD, we more than doubled our fundraising total. There are still various gifts related to the concert.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       
• Most importantly, If we are able to reach our goal, I'll be able to mentor and train students and musicians at now 5 additional non-profits (KCSM is the 6th non-profit that benefits). These include: The Jazzschool in Berkeley, Musically Minded Academy in Oakland, The Sound Room in Oakland, The Oaktown Jazz Workshop, and The Bird and Beckett Cultural Legacy Project in San Francisco. I really thought in this era of getting rather than giving, that you might like something more for giving, by having my campaign benefit as many organizations as possible.

What We Need & What You Get

• We need 50 funders at reduced price of $80 for Myra's CD and the In The Moment 2 CD Set or Myra broadcast 
• We need 20 funders at  (now at) $175 for Myra's CD, broadcast of her performance, and the In The Moment 2 CD Set
• We need 40 funders at $30 to receive 8 performances from the 2 CD set, recorded at Piedmont Piano.
• If we can raise our goal of $20,000, we'll do all the things that I want to accomplish. If we can get a total of 180 people to give a gift of a $100 to get the In The Moment 2 CD set,  we will do just that. The money will pay for the costs associated with the concert, and with the 2 CD set project, so that there will be no cost to KCSM.  Each musician who has contributed a track to the CD set, will receive an honorarium for the use of the track for a year. It will allow me to continue the radio show through 2014, and, I can teach students and musicians at Musically Minded Academy, The Jazzschool, The Oaktown Jazz Workshop, The Sound Room in Oakland, and The Bird and Beckett Cultural Legacy Project in San Francisco, the art of recording and music production at no cost, in an ongoing mentorship program through 2014. 
• The 2 CD set In The Moment live performance set will never be available commercially, and will be used to raise funds for KCSM, for a year, beginning in their Spring 2014 fund drive. Those who donate for this gift will receive a pre-release copy, after the completion of this campaign, before anyone else, and will also get a copy of the official release in the spring, which will include artwork and liner notes.  (If you use Paypal, I'll send the pre-release right away)

  There are a number of unique gifts associated with the CD release celebration with pianist Myra Melford on December 13th , 2013 at the Piedmont Piano Company in Oakland.  The Myra Melford performance was a solo piano concert at the Piedmont Piano Company in Oakland on Friday, Dec 13, at 8pm.  This concert was both a cd release celebration of her first-ever solo recording recently out on Firehouse 12 Records, called Life Carries Me This Way, and was a fundraising event for this campaign. The concert wias recorded by me and will be broadcast in March on In The Moment. and will be available as a gift, combined with Myra's new CD, signed. Each attendee of the concert, regardless of the level at which they contributed  will be acknowledged in the final 2 CD set of In The Moment highlights.  If you could not attend, you can still get Myra's signed CD for $50.00. For now just $80, a signed copy of Myra's new CD, and your choice of a broadcast of the concert (to be produced by March 2014), or a pre-release of the 2 CD set of In The Moment highlights. For $175, you get Myra signed CD, concert broadcast and In The Moment CD set. For $500, you get a pair  a signed Myra CD, the In The Moment 2 CD set, the broadcast cd, a special performance by Myra that night in dedication to In The Moment, and a personal audio recording workshop. (limited to 4) The next level up, $1000, gets all of the above, and a year's underwriting on KCSM's In The Moment, in honor of an individual, a non-profit, or local business. There will also be a mention on the In The Moment CD, and logo on the CD for local business or non-profit . You will also become part of the Producer's Circle for In The Moment, and I will produce the broadcast of Myra's performance, in collaboration with you (limited to 4). For $2000, all of the above, plus two years of underwriting on KCSM's In The Moment. (limited to 2) At any level you can ask to be anonymous. It would be great if employees of any business or non-profit could pool their resources, to get the underwriting in the name of their organization.You can also opt, if you give $250 or more, to challenge other supporters to match your donation.

  If you did attend the concert, you can still get all the other gifts at any level. You cannot get just the broadcast, as that is only available with Myra's actual CD.

  
  

• If I do not reach the goal, I have raised enough money to cover the costs of the December 13th concert and currently have seed money for the 2 CD set for KCSM. I will try to continue doing the radio show as long as I can without funding, but will also return to fundraising in March to raise the funds for the CD and to establish the mentorships at the five non-profits with students and musicians.
