Hello Indiegogo world!

Where to begin... Once upon a time, No, wait.. that's not right.

Who we are!

Even though we might not be very good at story telling, we are pretty well educated. Headed by Dr. Warwick Dobson, a master in Applied Theatre, and PhD Student Mathew Gusul, a founding member of one of  Canada's most successful intergenerational theatre companies, our group is full of knowledge and talent! The rest of us, students from UVic's Theatre Department are thrilled to be welcomed as a part of this incredible team, and are excited to put our last few years of education to work.

As a mixed group of students and educators from the University of Victoria, we have come together to build a team working on an incredible project, that we hope you are going to love as much as we do. Although we are based out of Canada, the reach of our project stretches all the way across that big blue mass called the Atlantic Ocean to the region of Tamil Nadu, India.

Who we are trying to help:

In 2004, a Tsunami hit the Indian coast and had devastating effects on the province of Tamil Nadu. Those who were able to, began the process of re-building their homes almost immediately. However, more vulnerable members of the community, and in particular the elders, were evacuated to the coastal region, where they were placed in accommodation that came to be known as “Grannie Dumps”. With financial assistance from HelpAge International, and with the support of Michael Etherton (2001, 2006, 2007, 2009), formerly Education Director of Save the Children UK, the elders now form an active, healthy community named Tamaraikulam Elders Village (TEV). As part of the process of coming to terms with their experience, this community now seeks an opportunity to tell its story.

This is where we come in!

What are we doing with this campaign?

The Tamaraikulam Elders Village is generously supported by an organization called Help Age India (check them out here: http://www.helpageindia.org). For now, our goal is simple. We need to raise $2000 to help Help Age India in their continual work in supporting the community at the Tamaraikulam Elders Village. Namely, to repair an old van that is in their possession. This van will serve many purposes, including transporting the elders, their support team, and eventually... US!

In conjunction with Help Age India, The Tamaraikulam Elders Village and the ISHA Foundation, we have been offered the incredible opportunity to help the elders of the village make sure that their story is heard.

What we hope to do in the long run..

In short, our goal is to create an Intergenerational theatre company consisting of members from TEV as well young students from a school supported by the ISHA foundation. It is hoped that Intergenerational theatre performances consisting of parts from both of these groups will positively impact the region. The company will stage stories from the lives of members to a wide variety of audiences throughout the area. This Intergenerational theatre company is beneficial in Tamil Nadu for the development of strong community relations because it has the potential to create lines of dialogue across generations. It is vital for the TEV elders to be connected to their new community because of their displacement and vulnerability after the tsunami. Intergenerational theatre techniques will provide opportunities for the elders’ stories to be told to the community’s younger generation. These types of intergenerational exchange offer the younger members of a community access to the knowledge held by older generations and, simultaneously, provide the elders with a platform for expressing their own views which, in turn, helps them build a sense of dignity.

How can you help us?

For us, it's all about taking this in steps, and step one is to make sure we get this van restored.

You may notice that we said we need $2000 to get the van back up and running... so why, you ask, are we only setting out goal for $1000? Well, we young people get side tracked pretty easily, and we decided that a simple indegogo campaign wasn't enough for us. Of course we would love all of the support we can get from our online community, but we wanted more! We wanted to be able to connect and celebrate with everyone who chooses to support us, whether it be with a monetary donation, coffee for the late nights we spend planning things, or just sending good vibes our way. So that's where the rest of our fundraising planning comes in, we're also having a great big party at the pub on campus! And we would LOVE for you to be there! How can you join in these fabulous festivities? There are a couple of ways:

#1. Check out our perks section - you will notice that many of the perks include FREE tickets to our event!

#2. Come on down to UVic, or contact one of our group members, and get yourself a ticket!

It's just that easy to get yourself in to a night that is guaranteed to be full of good music, great friends, and incredible vibes! This is a night about you! We aren't celebrating us, we're celebrating for all of the incredible people who are supporting Help Age India, TEV, and the ISHA foundation by helping us to meet our goals in order to help them. (think pay it forward).

Even if you can't make it to the party, don't be discouraged, there are still many ways for you to stay updated about what is happening with this project and where your generous donations wind up. Along with posting regular updates on this site, some of our other perks (which are available for a donation as low as $25) include receiving a personalized postcard, or even your own personal correspondent from our group!

Even if you can't make a donation right now, or even ever, there are still ways for you to help! Spread the word! Tell your friends, family, hair stylist, piano tuner, cat sitter, tree trimmer ANYONE about our project and the great potential that it holds. You can easily share this Indiegogo campaign on facebook and twitter. So even if you don't like talking to people, or work in Antarctica and don't have much human contact.. press one button and BOOM, you've helped us out! Of course, if we raise more than our goal of $1000 we will be thrilled, but for now, baby steps.

Thank-you so much to anyone and everyone who helps us out in any which way.

Keep your eyes peeled for updates!!

Much love,

Team INDIAgogo
