Conrad Evarts (406) 475-4994 or conradevarts@hotmail.com
Digital Connect is a small computer shop in Nairobi, Kenya.
Sisters Irene and Maureen operate Digital Connect. I have known them for seven years and their father for thirteen. My name is Conrad Evarts and over the past 13 years I've traveled extensively throughout Eastern and Southern Africa for my work as a television camera operator. You can read from the article linked above that Irene and I have worked successfully to take her from running a plow in her village to lecturing about computers at the University. She also writes code and adapts software to the Kenyan market.
We're now taking things to the next level. We are in the first few months of opening Digital Connect. It is a small shop selling laptops and tablets to students. We are selling new items at the moment because we can ship them from the US without paying tariffs. Irene now wants to expand into locally acquired refurbished computers for people that can't afford new units.
The new and refurbished computer sales will eventually fund a training center for ladies who want to increase their earning power by learning software. The training center will be operated by Irene and will be in the same neighborhood.
What do we need?
- Capital for refurbished computers. $300 USD per unit.
Why should you trust us?
- You can meet us anytime. We'll chat on the phone or tour you around Nairobi. Heck, come up to Montana and I'll take you fishing.
- So far this entire endeavor is funded by my (Conrad) middle class salary. In fact I'm selling my car today (April 18) so I have more cash to invest when we return in June. I believe in Irene and the Kenyan economy very deeply.
The Impact
We will grow this model of hi-tech opportunities for women across Kenya by eventualy franchising Digital Connect. Selling curios and soda pop is fine use of microloans for some women, but just as in the US there are Kenyan women that are capable of much more. The educated, energetic Kenyan woman owns a nimble and creative mind. By investing in this energy and creativity we all have the opportunity to benefit financially and environmentally.
The Timing
I am heading back to Nairobi in June with my 14 year old daughter. we will be working with Irene and Maureen to grow this business, buy a business vehicle and work on understanding the market more thoroughly. We want to have the refurb investment money together before then so we can make a bulk purchase and restock the shop in mid-June.
What do you get?
- A look into east Africa’s largest economy and an opportunity to learn about investing in one of the world’s thriving developing economies.
- An opportunity to assist in sustainable, long-term alleviation of poverty.
- The ability to begin manifesting your dream of visiting Kenya in an authentic way by developing relationships with Kenyans.
What else do you get?
For $35...
For $50 We will send you this beautiful pair of photos Laurie took in 2006 of Irene's Grandparents. When Laurie snapped these photos outside their home in Musalala where Irene grew up the "Grands" were married for 70 years. They were very proud of Irene's accomplishements at University. We are also posting a suggestion for framing. We can't afford to frame these, but this is how we did this in our home and it makes a great conversation piece. These are the first three photos in our gallery.

For $2500: "Investment Safari"
The business desperately needs a car. We will be offering an "Investment Safari" to donors who contribute $2500 or more. This will be a series of meetings in Nairobi with young entrepreneurs over the course of four days. Irene and I will be your guides. If you like, we will also arrange for an animal safari (at your expense) to the Masi Mara and a few days in the mountains spending time with Bantu people. It will be a blast and get your feet wet in this incredible country filled with opportunity.
