Our Campaign
Who: The Global Investigative Journalism Network – 90 organizations in 40 countries dedicated to expanding investigative reporting worldwide.
What: Fellowships to bring promising journalists from developing and transitioning countries to the Global Investigative Journalism Conference (GIJC13) for training in state-of-the-art investigative reporting, data journalism, and cross-border collaboration.
Where: The Global Investigative Journalism Conference, the largest ever international gathering of investigative reporters, in Rio de Janeiro. The Global Conference is held only once every two years and features the world’s top experts in investigative and data journalism.
When: October 12-15, 2013, with follow-up reporting and collaborative projects.
Why: Because investigative journalism in developing countries needs your support. Investigative reporters are the “special forces” of global journalism. They’ve helped topple dictators, uncover war crimes, and curb abuses of power, but our colleagues on the front lines are under constant assault – they need the best training and the latest tools to do their jobs.
Our campaign seeks to raise funds for fellowships to the Global Conference for great investigative journalists from some of the toughest, most corrupt parts of the world -- for countries in Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe and Latin America.
Each fellowship costs from $2,500 to $3,500 per person, which covers all expenses (airfare, hotel, registration fee, and a small per diem). At the Global Conference, they will receive intensive training by many of the world’s top investigative and data journalists.

The Training
-
The Global Conference will feature more than 100 panels, workshops, and seminars on new trends and tools in investigative journalism, digital and physical security, information access, and data journalism.
-
Data journalism sessions include training on spreadsheet skills, mapping, network analysis, and web scraping.
-
Multiple panels will focus on two key tracks at the conference: the environment and resources, and corruption and organized crime. Other topics include offshore investments, financial crime, sports, food and agriculture, and government spying.
-
A hackathon will focus programmers on apps that meet the needs of investigative reporters.
-
Collaboration workshops at the conference will link up fellows with investigative stories, databases, and fellow journalists worldwide.
The Fellowships
Working with our member organizations around the globe, GIJN will choose fellows from countries in Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe and Latin America.
What Do You Get for Helping Us?
There’s the satisfaction of knowing you’re supporting some of the world’s most heroic investigative reporters, but there are also a few extras. Perks range from being thanked on GIJN's popular website and social media to an exclusive report and webinar. And then there's our cool flash drive.
