The Invisible Universe Documentary just raised over $6600 with its recent Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign! It was an amazing 5 weeks of rallying with our fans and we appreciate all the support we received! However, we are not finished yet! Our goal was $20,000 and we still need to raise this amount to begin post-production!
Even if you missed the crowdfunding campaign, you can help us get there, by making a tax-deductible donation directly to our fiscal sponsor, Fractured Atlas: http://www.fracturedatlas.org/site/fiscal/profi...

BLACK SF /// BLACK SCI-FI /// BLACK SPECULATIVE FICTION /// AFROFUTURISM
All these terms have become synonymous with a type of fantastic truthtelling that explodes from the Black imagination. Whether in books, movies or comics, Black Speculative Fiction (typically, a conglomeration of fantasy, horror and science fiction genres), has been a way for Black creators to visualize the Black past, future and present, all in the face of a dominant culture that has mythologically, technologically and systematically worked to negate their voices, bodies, cultures and existences. However, for over 150 years, Black creators have recognized this "invisibleness" created by the dominant culture and have written, produced, performed, directed, drawn and most importantly struggled against, and in spite of, this erasure, by creating a universe of their own.
They are the Invisible Universe.
For the past ten years, producer/director, M. Asli Dukan has been producing this original and groundbreaking, independent documentary project about the history of representations of Black people in fantasy, horror and science fiction, or speculative fiction (SF) books, movies and comics. During this time, she has interviewed a "Who's Who" list of Black Speculative Fiction writers, filmmakers and artists, including creators like Samuel R. Delany, Octavia E. Butler, Wesley Snipes, Nichelle Nichols, Steven Barnes, Tananarive Due, Nalo Hopkinson, Nnedi Okorafor, Rasheeda Phillips, Adrienne Maree Brown, John Jennings, Dawud Anyabwile and Dwayne McDuffie. She has also traveled the country, documenting key conferences, conventions, panels, performances and other events of Black Speculative Fiction, like The Shadows Took Shape exhibition at The Studio Museum in Harlem in New York City, The East Coast Black Age of Comics Convention and The Afrofuturist Affair in Philadelphia, The Alien Encounter Conference at the Auburn Avenue Research Library on African American Culture in Atlanta, The CD Forum's Black to the Future: A Black SF Festival in Seattle, the Comic-Con International in San Diego and the Astro-Blackness conference in Los Angeles, and much more.
And now, Invisible Universe is finally in the post-production stage. And in order to be completed, Invisible Universe will need the financial backing of fans, readers, and supporters of the numerous Black Speculative Fiction communities around the United States and the world.
