  • Famous for it's medieval banquets and sweet mead, Bunratty Castle is an imposing medieval fortress built in 1425. It was restored to it's former glory in 1954 and contains authentic 15th and 16th century furnishings. In the wooded grounds of the castle, are many authentic cottages and crofts from Ireland's past and a complete 19th century street. The scent of burning turf, home baked apple pie and a Guinness in mac's pub make for a memorable visit.

Enchantingly situated on the banks of the river Maigue, silently watching over the ancient Augustinian Abbey and Franciscan Friary on the grounds of the world famous Adare Manor.   • Perched atop a 300 foot vertical cliff on the Aran Islands overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Dun Aonghasa is known as the “most magnificent barbaric monument in all of Europe”. Estimated to be over 3.000 years old, it has withstood the test of time and countless wild Atlantic storms to remain one of the most dramatic monuments in all of Ireland.
  • Dominating the landscape of Tipperary, the Rock of Cashel is among Ireland’s most spectacular monuments. Perched on a rocky outcrop and dating from the beginning of the 12th C., Cashel has one of the most remarkable and eclectic collections of Celtic art and medieval architecture in Europe. Once the traditional seat of the High Kings of Munster until the Norman invasion; Cashel is reputed to be the site of conversion of the King of Munster to Christianity by St. Patrick in the 5th century AD.
  • One of Ireland’s most iconic ancient monuments, Poulnabrone Dolmen has stood in the Burren for over 5,000 years. It’s Gaelic name Poll Na mBron means ‘ Hole of the Sorrows ’. Excavations in the 1980’s revealed the burials of between 16 to 22 adults and 6 juveniles, including a newborn baby. All dating from the Neolithic period. Poulnabrone was a place of ritual and symbolism for the ancient Irish.
  • Dunguaire castle overlooks the eastern shore of Galway bay just outside the quaint little town of Kinvara. Built in 1520 by the Hynes clan and named after King Guire, a famous king of Connacht. After falling into disrepair in the late 17th century and was purchased and restored by a surgeon and poet Oliver St. John Gogarty. Dunguire Castle is connected with Irish literary giants such as W.B. Yeats, George Bernard Shaw, John Millington Synge and Augusta, Lady Gregory
  • Located on King’s Island by the banks of the River Shannon, King John’s Castle is an impressive towered fortress founded in 1200. It was built on the site of a former Viking stronghold dating back to 922 AD. This castle saw a tumultuous history, culminating in the famous sieges if the 17th century. The Archaeology within the castle ranges from Pre-Norman house foundations to the remains of siege mines, perhaps the finest examples of excavated siege mines in all of Europe
  • Situated in lush wooded gardens, Blarney Castle is one of the top attractions in Ireland. Since the beginning of the 13th century, a castle has stood in the grounds. The present castle dates to 1446, built by the then king of Munster, Cormac Mc Carthy. Like many castles in Ireland, it has had it’s fair share of turmoil. Blarney is most famous for the ‘Stone of Eloquence’, upon being kissed, would bestow a person with great skill at flattery. Colloquially referred to as the ‘gift of the gab’
  • Leamaneh Castle, situated at the gateway to the lunar landscape of the Burren, was originally built as a tower house in 1489 by Turlough Donn, one of the last High Kings of Ireland and a direct descendant of Brian Boru. In 1648 the manor house was built against the original tower by Conor O’Brien and his infamous wife Maire Ni Mahon also known as Maire Rua, Red Mary due to her red hair. Maire was to marry three times, outliving all her husbands and suspected of murdering two of them.
  • In the heart of the Lush and wondrous Kilarney National Park, surrounded by the Macgillycuddy's Reeks mountains on the shores of the tranquil Lough Leane, sits the enchanting Ross Castle. Built in the late 14th c., it is regarded as one of the last fortifications to fall to the rampaging forces of Cromwell’s armies that decimated Ireland in the 17th century. Serenity awaits it’s pilgrims today and only a distant echo of troubled times permeate the walls of this once fine and proud stronghold.
  • Limerick City is situated on the Shannon River. Dating back to the Viking era, Limerick is famous for the sieges of the 17th C. It was granted city status by King John in the early 13th C. In this vista are some of Limerick’s finest buildings. Adjacent to Sarsfield’s Bridge is the Shannon Rowing Club, a listed Georgian building. In the background can be seen the majestic medieval tower of St. Mary’s Cathedral, the domed tower of St. Mary’s Church and the Limerick County Courthouse
  • In the heart of the fertile Boyne Valley Co. Meath on a hilltop stands Newgrange Passage Tomb. This Neolithic structure has dominated this ancient landscape for over 5,200 years. Build by a people with nothing more sophisticated than stone tools, it is considered one of the oldest buildings in the world. It predates the Pyramids of Egypt by 600 years and Stonehenge by 1,000 years.

A LAND OF ENCHANMENT

Ireland is famous for its friendly people, enchanting landscapes, rich culture and melodic music. People have inhabited this island for over 9,000 years. Ireland The Old Country presents my unique vision of the many monuments that have survived the centuries in the rich tapestry of the Irish landscape. From world famous castles to long forgotten ivy clad ruins off the beaten track. I hope that my images will inspire you to come to Ireland again and again and wander down the highways and byways and discover this mystical land of Ireland, The Old Country



Hello, folks. My name is Patrick Harnett. I am from Limerick City, Ireland. I have worked as a glass artist, set designer, archaeologist, English teacher, and tour guide. Ireland The Old Country is the result of my love for archaeology and art combined. Through my images, I want convey as close as possible the enchantment I feel as I wander around a lonely ivy-clad ruin in an ancient landscape.

I would love to be able to share my vision with the Irish community here in America, in Ireland and with people from all over the world who love and admire our unique landscape and heritage and culture.

That is why I have decided to produce a calendar of 12 of my favorite images in one package. These include Ireland's most well know and iconic monuments such as Newgrange, Poulnabrone Dolmen, Blarney Castle and many more. The goal of this IndieGoGo project is to raise enough money ($3,500) to print the calendars.

You can donate as little as $5 and receive a large fridge magnet or donate $20 or more and you will receive a 2014 calendar (17" x 11"). The calendar contains 12 images of Irish castles and other improtant monuments. Or you can choose a higher level perk and get stocked up early with beautiful Christmas gifts for all your family, friends, and business associates. Every dollar pitched in will help.

From the responses I’ve already received at Irish festivals and from the nearly 4,000 fans on my Facebook page, I believe I can sell out all the calendars printed well in time for the new year. This will provide seed money to produce further products such as canvas prints, refrigerator magnets, postcards, metal signs, and posters etc. And in turn this will enable me to be a vendor at the many wonderful Irish Festivals around the US of A.

Over time, I hope my work will inspire people to come and visit this wonderful and charming country. I would be ever so grateful if you could help by donating or simply by spreading the word about this project.
