Hi!
I'm Joey Bates, an artist living and working in Seattle, Washington.
I am raising funds to travel to Iceland to collect reference material for a new body of work. For the past year, I have been exploring mountains in the confines of my studio. Through this new inquiry, I have become fascinated by how land is formed. The internet has been a great help in finding visual references, but I think it's time I get out of the studio and experience a new terrain firsthand! Iceland is a hotbed of geological activity and a great place to see different ways in which land is created.
The series of work that I’ve just begun exploring revolves around the intense, violent, beautiful, tumultuous way that land comes about on this planet. I’m interested in the visual power of landscapes and telling that story through paintings and, eventually, paper-cut works.
This trip is about exploration and seeing where the reference material takes me and my artwork.
Iceland is expensive!!!
I’ve been saving up for the plane ticket and I’ve requested time off from my day job to make it out there in late August for seven days. Seven days is not very long, but it’s long enough to get some intense reference material and a taste of a different place. I’ve priced out the trip for seven days of fairly comfortable travel. I’ve also priced in a new camera. An equipment upgrade will be a huge help with my process.
$440 - Bus pass for southern Iceland + other transportation
$1,000 - Room rentals across the south for seven days
$400 - Food - three meals a day
$800 - New camera
$400 - Perk coverage (materials, printing and shipping)
$460 - Emergency funds/backup $$
$3,500
This final amount is my goal and includes a small cushion for the unexpected.
For me right now, fundraising is the most direct path to take this trip to Iceland.

When the money is raised, I will be able to go explore and get inspired by sights I have never seen. I will bring that experience back to my work in the studio, and I will create a new body of work that deals with something that we all know and need: land. This fundraiser is not for a specific product; rather, it is to help an artist leave his comfort zone, take chances with his work, and show a different perspective on landscape art.
I have set this campaign as a flexible funding campaign. If I do not reach the set goal, I will spend a smaller amount of time in Iceland. I cannot express my gratitude enough to all of you who have supported me in my art-making over the years.
