Short Summary

32-year-old Rebecca Zahau was found at her boyfriend’s California mansion in what leading forensic experts believe may have been a staged killing.

But, the San Diego Police Department closed the case after a short investigation and dismissed it as a suicide. Rebecca’s friends and family were distraught at this decision as there is so much evidence that points to murder. And the killer is still on the loose.

Rebecca’s friends and family have hired legal experts but have now exhausted their resources. Can you help?

LETTER FROM ONE OF REBECCA’S SISTER

Hi; I'm Mary, one of Rebecca's sisters. Many of you remember that day in July 2011 when my beloved Rebecca was taken from our family. The outrageousness of her death shocked the world. She was reportedly found bound, gagged, hanging naked from a balcony over the courtyard of the oceanfront mansion she shared with her lover. I say “reportedly” because there are no pictures of her hanging and little evidence she died by hanging.

The local authorities ignored evidence of a struggle, have “misplaced” key pieces of evidence (which we were able to recover with the help of the Attorney General) and our medical experts question the official report (which was released on the eve of a holiday weekend). We have come to Indiegogo to raise funds through crowd-funding to hire experts, investigators and lawyers, and bring to account those who harmed Rebecca.

While there's no statute of limitations on criminal murder charges, we are approaching some deadlines to file a civil case. Our goal is to prove who harmed Rebecca in civil court and hope the prosecutors then do their job by bringing murder charges to those who are responsible. Thank you.

WHAT HAPPENED IN THE MANSION…

Two years earlier, Rebecca fell in love with a very wealthy man, and moved in with him and his son from a former marriage. They lived as a family for two years.

2 Days before Rebecca’s death, there was a terrible tragedy involving the son. Rebecca was getting ready to take the boy and her youngest sister Xena to the beach. The boy went upstairs to clean his bedroom and get ready and Rebecca and her sister went to get ready themselves. Suddenly there was a crash. The boy was found on the ground of the first floor by the staircase. He was unconscious and severely injured, surrounded by broken pieces from the fallen chandelier and with his scooter nearby.

Less than 48 hours later, Rebecca Zahau was found dead in the most gruesome way possible. Her naked, lifeless body laid uncovered by the authorities for over 11 hours in full sight of neighbors and news helicopters flying overhead.

THERE WAS EVIDENCE OF A STRUGGLE.... IGNORED BY POLICE INVESTIGATORS

There were paint splatters on her body and the noose
A chair was overturned in "hanging" bedroom
There were four contusions on her head
Screams reportedly heard by neighbors
Her arms were tied so she couldn't fight back.
Her legs were bound so she couldn't run away
There was clear plastic tape residue on her leg
She was gagged so she couldn't scream again
The noose was placed over her hair
A t-shirt was wrapped around the noose
Candleholder overturned on first floor
Two knives found in the "hanging" bedroom. Why 2?
Two paintbrushes found in the "hanging" bedroom. Why 2?
Abrasion on her finger
Blood on her body
Evidence of possible manual strangulation
Injuries inconsistent with vertical hanging
Her feet were caked with mud though there were not any muddy footprints inside the house
A message in the third person was written on the bedroom door of the crime scene. "SHE SAVED HIM CAN YOU SAVE HER" Why would a suicidal person leave a note with the words “her” and “she” instead of using “I” and “me”?
There were several unidentified fingerprints at the scene, Yet not everyone of interest (not living in the house) was fingerprinted. Not all of the DNA found at the scene was tested.

WHY INDIEGOGO?

Indiegogo has been a great method of raising money for worthwhile projects. However, this is the first time to our knowledge that crowdfunding has been used to fund a death investigation and lawsuit. This may be the first lawsuit funded through donations of people around the world, brought together by crowdfunding. Lawsuits are very expensive and the family is of limited means. There is no way they could come up with the money to hire experts and investigators to do the job of the police and then hire lawyers to take the case. So we’re turning to you. We think there are thousands… maybe hundreds of thousands of people around the world who can give $1, $5 or more to help us bring Justice for Rebecca.

If you think about it, all criminal prosecutions are crowdfunded through taxes, using a little bit of money from each of us to pay for prosecutors, courts and jails. But we don’t have access to tax money to do what the police and sheriff should have done. Through the Internet, though, we have access to you. Please help. A project of this importance is very expensive… more than you can imagine. We will need a small army of experts to prove our case including medical doctors, biomechanical engineers, metallurgists, handwriting analysts, crime scene analysts, homicide experts, and forensic psychologists. We’ll also need a team of investigators to pursue the leads our attorneys have developed. It’s a staggering amount of money that we need, but we wouldn’t do it if our fight wasn’t the right thing to do. We need for those responsible for Rebecca’s death to know that we have the resources to fight.
