Juul Haalmeyer: THE MOVIE is a character-driven portrait documentary about Toronto's Emmy award-winning costume designer, Juul Haalmeyer. Though popularly recognized for his minor recurring role on SCTV as the leader of the 'Juul Haalmeyer Dancers', within the industry Juul is regarded as a distinctive and accomplished costume designer who has worked in film and television for over 40 years.
Mapping crossroads both personal and professional, Juul Haalmeyer: THE MOVIE will offer viewers a candid glimpse into Juul's day-to-day life while simultaneously providing a retrospective look at the glitzy, star-infused and exhausting professional history of a Canadian costumier.
Having cut his teeth on the variety show circuit throughout the 1970s on several American co-productions, Juul has dressed some of the biggest names in show business during that era. From Jack Lemmon to Phyllis Diller to Ike & Tina Turner - Juul has dressed them all
… and does he have stories ...
We began filming Juul and his Fashion District studio in June of 2013. To-date we've accumulated over thirty hours of beautifully shot master interview footage with Juul. We have also documented the many iconic costumes housed within that space. At this stage, we require funding in order to map changes in Juul's life throughout the upcoming calendar year and to complete numerous interviews with Juul's family, friends and colleagues.
Juul's story is important. While his professional history is wildly entertaining - aspects of his personal story are truly significant and inspiring.
Donating to this campaign will help us to make the best film possible. All funding received will go toward our production budget and will be used to cover basic equipment rental fees and upgrades. Did you know that on August 16th, 1966 Juul Haalmeyer beat out local baton twirler Peggy Walker, taking home First Prize at the Siskiyou County Fair Talent Show?
Juul states that the Talent Show was a "diversion between the pig and pie contests". He sang "Somewhere" from West Side Story and won $50. He also earned a giant trophy but he gifted it to his accompanist, Kathy Whittaker, because "it was so tacky" and he didn't want it in his house.
