March 13, 2014 Update-
Dear Backers,
It has been a very exciting past few months for us at Keen Home. As a part of the TechStars connected devices accelerator, we just had our demo day at SXSW this past weekend (link). Along with showing off a new brand design, we announced some exciting partnerships for our Smart Vent with companies like SmartThings, Revolv, and Lowe's. Along with these announcements, we are currently finalizing our agreement with a premier contract manufacturer who will produce and manage the end to end logistics for the product.
The process of bringing this product to market has taken us longer than we anticipated, and we apologize for that. We could have rushed a sub-par product out into the market, but that would not have been fair to you, our earliest supporters. Nor would rushing something out fulfill our true vision for the product. We are currently on pace to begin large scale manufacturing of the Smart Vent by late summer with product to ship by October of this year. Again, we do apologize for this delay, but believe that this extra time will allow us to make the best product possible.
Because of these delays, we would like to offer any of our backers the opportunity for a refund of their contribution. We hope you will remain supporters, but understand if you would like a refund. We will also be reaching out in the coming weeks to see if any of you would like to be beta testers for the product.

August 26, 2013 Update-
Keen Home on track to produce beta units by January 2014.
Between 100-300 beta units will be produced and placed into 20-50 test homes. We will collect usage data over a period of 60-90 days in order to identify product design changes that need to be implemented in the finished product.
July 6, 2013 Update-Keen Home has decided to use the ZigBee HA 1.2 wireless protocol standard for its Keen Vent.
ZigBee Home Automation 1.2, is a groundbreaking update to the industry leading standard creating smarter homes around the world; this update enhances and delivers new features and benefits that improve the comfort, security and energy management of consumers and enable new business models for service providers worldwide.
ZigBee Home Automation 1.2 is significant as it adds several important new features that greatly enhance consumer experience, enable expanded service offerings, add new energy awareness features without necessarily connecting to an electric meter and augment functions for devices such as door locks, appliances and a range of sensors.
ZigBee Home Automation is a preferred standard because it offers a combination of low power, reliability, security and scalability that is unmatched in the industry.

With this succesful campaign, we are on pace to meet our production goals of shipping out Keen Vent Systems next year. Over the next few months we will continue to refine the hardware and software development, and complete product testing.

THE EUREKA MOMENT
Have you ever tossed and turned at night because your room was too hot or cold? Well we sure have! Sometimes we’d gaze up at the air vents in our ceiling, the main culprit of our discomfort, wishing we could easily open/close them with our smartphones. Why wasn’t there a product that could help us?
THE PROBLEM
The average American household spends half of its total energy bill on heating and cooling costs. This same home also has 2–4 rooms overheated or over cooled (“over-conditioned”) at any time. This is not only uncomfortable but also terribly energy inefficient. Manually opening and closing various vents is inconvenient and labor intensive.

OUR PRODUCT
To solve these issues, we developed the Keen Vent. The Keen Vent is a wirelessly networked home air vent that maximizes the efficiency and comfort of a home’s heating and cooling system by intelligently redirecting central HVAC airflow.

Keen Vents are primarily installed in over-conditioned rooms and automatically open and close in response to specific details of a user’s home and lifestyle—effectively reducing a home’s square footage that needs to be conditioned at that time. The average single family home will need a Keen Vent System (made up of 4 Keen Vents) to optimize their existing HVAC system.
Our tests in homes across the country show that the Keen Vent System shortens the run time of central HVAC systems by up to 30%.
With these efficiency gains, the Keen Vent System pays for itself in the first year of operation.
Anyone with a home Internet connection and a central heating or cooling system can benefit from the Keen Vent, which will be sold in four standard sizes: 4”x10”, 4”x12”, 6”x10”, and 6”x12”. The vent will be made from paintable polycarbonate composite that is attractive and high quality.
All Keen Vents purchased via this pre-order campaign will have LIFETIME software service plans. There will be no additional fees.

To avoid damage to the HVAC fan, only one third of all vents in a home should be Keen Vents. In addition to networked vents, we will also sell non-networked faceplates to allow customers to coordinate all vents in their home. These will be user-installed the same way as networked Keen Vents.
Vent usage information is measured and maintained in the cloud, allowing our proprietary Keen Home software to use customer data to adjust vent schedules according to changing temperatures both inside and outside a user’s home.
STATUS OF PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT
The Keen Vent was born in November 2012.
We have already completed multiple design iterations in order to develop our demo prototype, which is pictured above.
A successful campaign will allow us to complete our product development and produce a unit for beta testing. Production-ready units are expected to ship to U.S. customers in Q3 2014 and Canadian customers by Q4 2014.
U.S. shipping and handling for all Keen Vent perks will be $10.
Canadian shipping and handling for all Keen Vent perks will be $25.
