Kite Shield’s patent-pending formula works by targeting mosquitoes’ sensing receptors -the part of the insect that guides them towards a food source. Our synergistic blend of botanical active ingredients confuses the receptors and creates a barrier on the skin. All you have to do is spray Kite Shield on your skin and the mosquito-blocking shield of protection goes to work. Kite Shield makes you virtually invisible- if they can’t find you, they can’t bite you!

We have put Kite Shield through rigorous independent and third party tests performed by Carroll-Loye Biological Research, a recognized leader in insect repellent testing.

3. What type of insects does Kite Shield repel?
Kite Shield repels mosquitoes and is proven effective against the following mosquito species:  Aedes aegypti, Culex quinquefasciatus, Anopheles quadrimaculatus

4. How often do I need to re-apply?
We recommend re-applying Kite Shield every 2 hours or as needed. 

5. How long does Kite Shield last?
Up to 4 hours against Culex quinquefasciatus, 2 hours against Aedes aegypti, and 90 minutes against Anopheles quadrimaculatus mosquitoes.  Results may vary.

6. What are the ingredients of Kite Shield?
The ingredients of our patent pending formula include: lemongrass oil, thyme oil, peppermint oil, corn oil, wintergreen oil, vanillin, and isopropyl alcohol.

7. Can pregnant women and babies use Kite Shield?
We suggest discussing the ingredients listed on the label with your physician, as they know your medical history best and can provide valuable guidance.

8. Can I use Kite Shield on my toddler?
Yes, but we suggest discussing the ingredients listed on the label with your physician, as they know your children’s medical history best and can provide valuable guidance. Adult supervision is required when applying to children. Because children often put their hands in their mouths, do not apply Kite Shield to children’s hands. Read and follow the label instructions carefully.

9. Can I use Kite Shield on pets?
Kite Shield has not been tested on pets for safety, so we’re unable to make a recommendation.

10. Can I spray Kite Shield on clothing?
Kite Shield has not been tested for compatibility with all types of fabric. Before using Kite Shield on your clothing, test it on a small inconspicuous area to ensure that the fabric will not be stained by the natural, botanical oils in the formulation. For areas where mosquito infestations are extreme, consider applying Kite Shield to your skin and wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants to increase your protection.

11. How long will Kite Shield be good for?
Kite Shield should be stored in a cool, dry place away from heat or flame. Based on our experience when Kite Shield is stored under these conditions, the product is stable.

12. Can I use Kite Shield if I’m asthmatic or have other medical condition?
Discuss the ingredients listed on the label with your physician before use to determine if Kite Shield is right for you. 

13. Is Kite Shield approved by the EPA?

15. Does Kite Shield work against midges or other biting flies?
Kite Shield has not yet been tested against other insects such as midges, biting flies, bed bugs and therefore we’re unable to attest to its efficacy against these insects at this time.

16. Does Kite Shield work with any non-profit organizations?
Kite is looking for partners with the ability to help distribute mosquito protection to underserved peoples. Currently, we are helping raise funds for Malaria No More to help end malaria.

17. The types of mosquitoes tested against are very specific. Would the product be expected to repel all types of Culex as effectively as the Culex Quinquefasciatus, and so on with the other types as well? Or only the very specific types listed?
Mosquito species within each genus are relatively closely related to one another, so Kite Shield may be effective against other species as well. We just don't have supporting efficacy nor duration data because we cannot practically test against all species. Note that our efficacy data is against the three most common species that mosquito repellents are tested against.

18. Is Kite Shield stable for an indefinite period of time?
As storage conditions can vary greatly, we suggest replacing the product if you start having concerns about its potency.

19. Is Kite Shield waterproof or sweat-resistant?
No, re-apply as needed and ensure skin is completely dry before application.  The product may cause skin irritation or allergic reaction in some individuals, and if your pores are open from sweating, showering or other activity, it may be even more sensitive to irritation.  Also note that some parts of your body may be more sensitive to irritation than others.

20.  What is the status of Kite Patch? 
I originally backed it and I’m still waiting for my perks. Please see Kite Patch section. Kite Patch is still in development and our goal is for it to be ready in 2017.

21.  Can I still upgrade my Kite Patch perks to Kite Shield?
Absolutely, you can request the upgrade by going to our campaign page and clicking on the ‘Ask a question’ link, which is to the right of the video block.

22. As an original Kite Patch backer, I’m confused.  I received an email saying I will receive a free bottle of Kite Shield.  Does that mean I’m getting Kite Shield in addition to my original Kite Patch perks?
Yes.  If you did not upgrade to Kite Shield, you will receive your Kite Patch perks when they are available.  The free bottle of Kite Shield is a token of appreciation for our backers who have been patiently waiting for their Kite Patch perks.

23.  It seems like all focus was shifted from Kite Patch to Kite Shield.  What is the timeline and plan for receiving the patches?
Kite Shield had a faster path to market but its development did not delay production of Kite Patch.  Kite Patch is being developed using the same technology to complement Kite Shield, and our goal is to be ready in 2017.

24.  What are the differences between Kite Patch and Kite Shield?

25. Why did you use the Kite Patch campaign to launch your Kite Shield InDemand campaign, instead of starting a new one?
We wanted to build on top of the Kite community you helped us create 3 years ago.  Doing so provides a small company such as ours the platform to get Kite Shield out to market with the help of our growing community of Indiegogo supporters.

Kite Patch 

When we launched the Kite Patch Indiegogo campaign June 2013, we set out to replace age-old, cumbersome, potentially unhealthy, DEET-based repellents and change the way we protect ourselves from mosquitoes. Our goal was to develop a healthier mosquito control for both people and the planet.

Since then, we have been working tirelessly to achieve this goal. The journey has been challenging. Our Uganda field survey and technology evaluation was eye opening and pushed us to continue to evolve and innovate. We researched and tested various technologies, brought in experts and worked with development partners to make Kite Patch a possibility. Some approaches proved unscalable, some underperformed and all required a long regulatory approval processes.

The tremendous support from our community of Indiegogo backers, has kept us going and innovating to bring world-changing technology to everyone. We reached a major milestone in our Kite development journey with ingredients that are scalable, effective, and exempt from having to go through the Environmental Protection Agency’s regulatory approval processes, and the result was Kite Shield. Development of Kite Shield did not delay production of Kite Patch and it is being developed using the same technology.

At this stage, Kite Patch is not as effective as Kite Shield. As we continue to develop it, we seek to make it a complementary product to Kite Shield.
