Much love and dust

Imagine it: a playground of extraordinary creatures in the greatest fire show. A life-size T-Rex roars across the desert playa while boxing bunnies, swimming polar bears, hopeless headless chickens, propelling pterodactyls, haunting hyenas and a 60-foot pendulum swing to the beat. All alive and burning.

After wowing the AfrikaBurn community with the show in May this year, the AfrikaBurn Fire Collective is ready to take the show to Burning Man - and we need your help in getting it there. We are transporting our sculptures and our crew from Cape Town all the way to Black Rock City, Nevada, and it's going to be one heck of a swim, if not for YOU!

Support us – we will shower you in love for it (or in grease, if that’s your thing!)

About us

The AfrikaBurn Fire Collective is a slightly feral, renegade group of blacksmiths, engineers, artists, carpenters, photographers and others from the AfrikaBurn organisation in South Africa. We like making extraordinary things and love to share our creations with the world.

Our mission is to take our flaming spectacular, distinctly AfrikaBurn-style, sculptural performance VLAM STOF (Flame & Dust) Odd-I-See from the dusty desert in South Africa all the way to Burning Man in 2013.

 More about the show

A blazing opera of fantastical flaming sculptures dancing under the stars, in a performance that is both magnificently playful and deeply touching.

The narrative is a cheeky evocation of a primordial struggle: our smithies conjure up a set of earth-creatures of steel and fire to battle it out over limited resources.  The pieces are ignited in a moving, playful chain‐reaction of fire, framed by a 60-foot high spinning pendulum blazing a beautiful arc of sparks through the night sky. Lizzy, a giant flaming T-Rex built out of scrap metal, emerges from an egg while two metal rabbits engage in a boxing match over a fallen carrot nearby. Joining in the theatrics is a flaming polar bear swimming for his life, pterodactyls, hyenas, headless chickens and more.

What We Need

We need money to share these magic creatures and their show with the world. We’ve been honoured to receive an art grant from Burning Man to help us in our quest, and we are holding fundraising events in South Africa. However as we watch our currency plummet and jet fuel prices go up, we admit our budgetary limitations, and need to appeal for more.

Besides the materials for the sculptures, our major cost is moving the sculptures from one side of the planet to the other – from Cape Town, South Africa to Nevada, USA.

All funds go directly to AfrikaBurn Creative Projects, a not-for-profit organization. (South African reg no 2007/020812/08) – please see our website for more info on the organization and annual accounts.

About Afrikaburn:

AfrikaBurn is the 7-year-old African regional offshoot of Burning Man. It’s a fabulous example of how the ethos of Burning Man has spread across the globe.  We are keen to share our particular flaming madness with the main Burning Man event, whilst building bridges between our continents and making friends on our global collective playgrounds.
