Program Summary
Fly-by-Night Dance Theater is a Professional Aerial Dance company led by Artistic Director Julie Ludwick. The company has a long history of providing arts programming for
underserved communities by offering FREE arts workshops and FREE and
reduced admission to their performances in New York City as well as opportunities to be professionally produced.
We serve the NYC Dance community in many ways:
- We offer classes in Aerial and Improvisational Dance that are affordable (and often FREE) for diverse groups of people. Ms. Ludwick has a Masters Degree in Dance & Dance Education and has
taught in the NYC area for over 20 years. She shares this knowledge with
the young people in her local community at Muscota New School by
offering FREE after school dance classes.
- We award annual SCHOLARSHIPS for NYC dancers of color to study
Aerial Dance with the company. Our audition class for the scholarship is open to any dancer of color to attend at no
charge.
- We professionally produce performances that push the artistic boundaries of dance into new territories and include live music whenever financially possible. Our performances blend Aerial Dance with Modern Dance and we create expressive and emotionally moving works that appeal to all ages.
- We have produced 7 NYC Aerial Dance Festivals that bring together Aerial Artists from around the U.S. There is no fee to audition or perform in the festival.
Our After School Dance Program
educates students beyond movement - we also concentrate on essential life skills that help students succeed such as:
* Increasing students' Cooperative Skills
* Exercising Verbal Skills to Describe the Dances they See & Do
* Comparing the languages of Dance, Music & Visual Art
Our Scholarship for NYC dancers of color serves the whole community by providing a venue that brings together a diverse group of people to follow their passions. Integration in our society should come at every level and when adult students come together to improvise and share their artistic voices we all benefit.
Our Aerial Dance Festivals allow Aerial Dances to have their work produced professionally at no cost. They also receive DVD's and professional photos of their work which they can use when applying for grants or seeking other performing opportunities.
What We Need
Operational Funds. Individuals LIKE YOU run the non-profit economy.
Without individual financial support, a non-profit like ours cannot continue to operate. Although we do receive grants, the amount received through foundations and government programs pays only 1/4 of what it costs to do the work we do.
We would really like to be in the financial position to expand our programs (so we can serve more public school students, give out more Aerial Dance scholarships, pay for administration of another Aerial Dance Festival, etc.).
These are the types of things we spend our money on:
- We rent studio space to hold our scholarship classes
- We rent theaters to do our professional performances
- We pay our teachers
- We hire professional musicians to perform with us
- We purchase rigging for our Aerial classes and shows and materials for our after school classes
- We pay grant writers and administrative consultants to make sure our biggest resource (volunteer time) is used effectively
