LYME DISEASE RESEARCH
My campaign deadline is drawing near and I am a million miles away from target. Possibly because I launched in the run up to christmas; possibly I misunderstood the public's interest in Lyme disease. I will re-think my strategy and launch another campaign in the spring of 2016 because Lyme disease is a growing epidemic. All funding received during this campaign will kick start the next one. My thanks to everyone who has supported me.
with my best regards, Maggie Tisserand

Lyme disease is a growing epidemic with many hundreds of thousands of sufferers in the United States and millions worldwide. It is an emerging disease in the UK, where I live , and this campaign is to raise money for research. If sufficient funds are raised I will be able to commission microbiology research in a UK university, but if not I will pay a private microbiology lab to conduct tests, pitting essential oils against Borrelia bacteria - the bacterial spirochaete that causes Lyme disease. When results are in I will get that information into the public domain. And, I will start a Lyme awareness campaign in schools.
My name is Maggie Tisserand and I am the author of six books on the subject of aromatherapy. I love the versatility of essential oils - some are very powerful antibacterials - and it is this aspect that I find so fascinating.
Book number six, my latest, came out of my passion to find antibacterial essential oils to fight MRSA. 'Aromatherapy vs MRSA' contains information on the global problem of MRSA as infections are now being recorded in all but one of the continents, along with scientific evidence of essential oils capable of killing antibiotic-resistant bacteria. MICROBIOLOGY TESTS
Following on from successful testing of essential oils against MRSA bacteria I will now begin the challenge of testing essentials oils against Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacteria that causes Lyme disease. The research will take place within a UK university (with sufficient funding as this is high cost research). I intend to test several essential oils, each with the known potential to kill or inhibit the growth of bacteria, and I will also test other products from nature. When results are collated and analysed I will make the research available to anyone suffering from Lyme disease by getting the research results into the public domain - via Twitter, Facebook and directly to individuals. In 2016 I will begin a LYME AWARENESS CAMPAIGN in the UK.
FUNDING FOR RESEARCH INTO LYME DISEASE
Lyme disease affects an untold number of people; its effects can be devastating, causing extreme tiredness, fevers, aching joints, and as it attacks the central nervous system, it can cause many serious issues, often times mimicking MS or Parkinsons disease. Although antibiotics can work effectively in the early stages, there are many people with a chronic Lyme condition. Over the past year I have been getting emails from Lyme sufferers in the USA and Europe asking for advice on which essential oils to use, and I always say "so far I have only researched MRSA". My aim is to research LYME DISEASE and to look for scientific evidence of essential oils (and other natural products) that are able to kill/inhibit the growth of Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacteria responsible for Lyme infections.
MAGGIE'S WRITING HISTORY
'Aromatherapy for Women' was my first book, published in 1985 in paperback format and reprinted many times with four revised editions. It has sold over 700,000 copies worldwide and today is still selling in the USA and in South Korea. Once publishers could see that aromatherapy was a fascinating subject that was very much 'here to stay' I received other publishing commissions. But when it came to finding a publisher for 'Aromatherapy vs MRSA' in 2011, it was impossible for me to find a publishing house to take it on, as they all said 'you are ahead of your time'. So a good friend of mine offered to work with me and between us we self-published the first edition. The 2015 edition of 'Aromatherapy vs MRSA' is now published by Singing Dragon, an imprint of Jessica Kingsley Publishers - with offices in London and Philadelphia.

The book took me three years to research and write and contains a wealth of practical advice; scientific studies of MRSA incidence around the world; and most importantly, it documents the power and efficacy of essential oils to do what antibiotics can't do - kill bacteria without the fear of bacterial resistance. There is a section on how to protect yourself when going into hospital for surgery, what to take with you, questions to ask if you are concerned about your wound, and much more. The book is written in simple layman's terms but is fully cited for anyone wishing to read the original scientific papers.
PAST RESEARCH
My past work with a UK university microbiology team spanned a period of five years - 2005 to 2009 - with research funded by one university grant and one 'entrepreneur grant'. This work followed on from the initial research which was funded by me taking a second mortgage over my apartment to pay a private laboratory to conduct tests; a selection of bacterial strains that were then challenged with essential oils. It was exciting to see how quickly some bacteria were killed off and I ended up taking my results to a university. For someone like me, who doesn't have a scientific or medical background, it was wonderful to be invited into the university to initiate microbiology testing of essential oils against bacteria - in particular staphylococcus aureus that is carried by every human being and many animals. In 2009 the successful results were written up and published in a journal, and in 2011 the first edition of 'Aromatherapy vs MRSA' was published. My research, together with microbiology/essential oils research from around the world takes up one third of the book.
YOU CAN HELP ME
It is only this year that I have begun to understand the enormity of the devastation that Lyme Disease creates, and after crying whilst watching the Lyme DVD 'UNDER OUR SKIN ' I made a decision to do with Lyme disease bacteria (Borrelia) what I have already done with MRSA - find out which essential oils can kill off the bacteria, allowing the body to heal itself. But I can't do this without your help, as microbiology research is very expensive.
I do not have a medical or scientific background - just an inquiring mind and a strong conviction that essential oils are one of the most powerful of remedies for many of mankind's ailments. I can't give any guarantees that I will be successful with finding scientific evidence of essential oils and other natural products that can kill Borrelia burgdorferi and related bacteria, but as Lyme disease is a growing epidemic, both for mankind and companion animals, I am going to give it my best shot because I truly believe that in essential oils, we have the perfect antimicrobials.
MY TEAM
As well as me, conducting the research and liaising with microbiologists, my team consists of two valuable helpers - my daughter Saffron, who helps set up and run my social media, and Laura, friend to my daughter Lucy, who died from cancer three years ago. So between us we will - make sure that emails are sent out regularly; that perks are dispatched on time; and then to get research results into the public domain via social media, support groups, TV and any other possible way.
FAQ
Q. Where will my money be spent?
A. Beginning in early 2016 the microbiology trials will commence, either through a private laboratory or within a UK university, depending on what support comes in.
Q. Your surname is the same as a range of aromatherapy products; are you connected to them and if so, why can't these products be given as PERKS.
A. I have not been involved with that company since 1987. I am limited in what I have to give as a PERK. I am a researcher-writer so all I have to give is - my book; an email with advance information of the trial results; a talk to interested groups about my understanding of how essential oils work against bacteria together with my first hand knowledge of the amazing journey of aromatherapy.
Q. What happens if you don't raise enough funding for laboratory tests.
A. It is my hope that support will make it possible to initiate at least one set of trials in a private microbiology lab. Should there be no further funding than the amount shown on Day 5 then I would set up a campaign on another crowd funding site and use the money raised on Indie to kick start a new campaign. I am quite determined to get testing under way as soon as possible.
OTHER WAYS YOU CAN HELP
