About the Play
Set in Sheffield England against the backdrop of an economic downturn, the play Made of Stone is the first play by Leo Butler. It was first performed as part of the Young Writers' Festival at the Royal Court in London in 2000.
Butler called the play, which is named after the Stone Roses’ 1989 song of the same title, his 'love letter' to Sheffield. Butler says that the starting point for any of his plays is an image. Here he claimed it was that of two brothers standing by their father's grave, which is featured in the opening scene. The play centres on three brothers coming to terms with their father's death. This six member ensemble cast confronts the trials and tribulations of life, forcing the viewer to confront the prejudices and insecurities that are rooted deep in their minds, which have caused them to be ‘Made of Stone’.
Time Out praised it as "a corrosive examination of manhood, capturing a regional way of living, once bound by heavy industry, manual labour and close, interlocking friendships, now brought to its knees."
Your Donations
Your donations will be used to help finance our venue, props, set design, rehearsal space, and other related expenses. We're really hoping for $4000 - $6000 but have kept our 'goal' conservative to be realistic. Our aim is to put on a project that looks like it wasn't paid for with sweat, nickels, lint and bits of string.
We are actors after all. ;)
When/Where?
The play will run from October 1st to the 12th 2013 at Studio 16 Theatre on West 7th and Granville.

Prohibition Theatre
Prohibition Theatre is a self-funded grassroots theatre company in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Our mission is to involve young talent in cutting-edge theatre for the enjoyment of industry professionals and theatre lovers alike. Our aim is to evoke passion in our audiences, inspire them to frequent theatre, and create productions of their own. We also seek to help Vancouver's theatre scene become more fearless in presenting challenging and raw material. Like other companies that have inspired us in recent years, such as Dirty Manhattan (Dinner with Friends) and Mitch and Murray Productions (Race), we seek to continue that tradition and momentum filling the void left in recent years of funding setbacks to the arts.
As we are a grass-roots theatre company, every contribution - no matter how big or small - is incredibly helpful. We've designed our campaign to not only attract an audience, but to also provide a channel for both those who can and can't attend the play to donate and show their support.
We don't feel that we are entitled to your donations, but we are truly thankful for them. This project is driven by our love of captivating theatre. If you pay to see a play, you deserve to see something amazing - that's what Prohibition Theatre is all about.
The truth is we can put this play up in our livingroom, but Mom and Dad said no...
Anyhow...
On a final note, please help us out by spreading the word through your wonderful social media platforms. There are these new fangled things the kids are doing called "The Twitter" and "The Facebook". So help us out ;)
