When people have seen too much of each other, they typically say they need their own space. Well, so do we. However, in this case, it’s not a figure of speech. Young art students in Yerevan, Armenia need space to continue their art projects. We are a free art school called Medialab and have been providing high school kids the opportunity, knowledge and tools to create art since 2008. In order for us to keep this program going, sizeable rented space is needed for continued classes and equipment storage. Please help us get the space we need!

What is Medialab?

Medialab is a free art school established in 2008 by Utopiana NGO in Yerevan, Armenia. Our free six-month educational program invites high school students to learn the theory and practice of contemporary art. This program helps students to develop individual artistic skills and critical attitude towards technology. Our teachers are young local professionals who are volunteers with the program.

Students learn about:

• history and theory of photography
• creative writing
• traditional, digital and experimental photography
• film composition skills
• camera operator skills
• script preparation and creation
• video and photo editing software
• creation and presentation of artistic projects

Participants can obtain specialized literature and video materials from Utopiana’s library and other necessary tools from its technical laboratory.

Why Support

Armenia’s current art schools (colleges, fine arts institutes, universities, etc.) exclusively teach the traditional means of art with Soviet methodology. Due to this, there has been an unfortunate stall in the field’s modernizing culture and technological advancement. As a way to challenge that, supporting this project will open doors for Armenia’s youth to participate in not only the growing arts, but the social progress that enhances society’s knowledge of this vast discipline.

Through Medialab, our students will have the chance to familiarize themselves with the local and global contexts of art and meet with local and foreign artists, photographers, camera operators, critics and curators.

For a country like Armenia, it is absolutely a one of a kind opportunity for its youth.

We've already had four groups of students. Here are the photos from the last graduation ceremony in May 2013.

This project is valuable to the world because it will broaden the international artistic pool with talent that can introduce new ideas and contribute to this creative field. After all, Medialab is an example of how a small motivated group can work together and achieve great results.
