Chronic illness doesn't have to be a life sentence

A recent study [1] specifically found that just eight hours of mindfulness meditation down regulates (dampens) HDAC and COX2 genes – meaning that mindfulness is an antihistamine and a mast cell stabiliser [2] as well as a prostaglandin inhibitor [3].

After 30 years of severe chronic illness, much of it experienced while covering conflicts for CNN and the BBC, in March of this year I was finally diagnosed with an inflammatory condition called mast cell activation syndrome/disorder (initial diagnosis was histamine intolerance). Because mast cells are a key component of the immune system and are found in every organ, symptoms number in the dozens and span every bodily function. The most serious of these symptoms is anaphylactic shock, which, unlike in allergies, is not to any one thing, but rather hundreds of potential triggers, including stress, heat (even a hairdryer!), foods and sex. Yup, you heard right!

In the last two years I have managed to completely turn my health around, without any medication. An incredible feat for me, having been on at least two meds daily (and up to 8) for most of my life. Diet and nutrition took me as far as I could get, but something was missing. And so I began meditating for the first time in years. The power of meditation on my health is so strong that it even helped me when I went into anaphylactic shock in Kenya this year. No doctors or meds were available, and so I did what I could, and lived to tell the tale.

I’ve been practicing mindfulness/meditation in general on and off since the age of 18, but this time it stuck. I think it did because I truly committed to it and  finally understood the science behind it, namely that:

Meditation is an antihistamine and a mast cell stabilizer, precisely the two things we are supposed to take a number of meds for, as well as a prostaglandin inhibitor, more meds. It’s so powerful that it brought me back from the brink when I went into anaphylactic shock and had no meds on me. Meditation actually changes the way our genes express. How about that for an epigentic boost!

While I’ve known for some time now that yoga lowers inflammation and yogic pranayama breathing fights asthma by lowering histamine [4], I was nonetheless incredibly excited to hear something specifically linked to my condition.

What works for me generally applies to others with my condition, as well as a related rare condition called mastocytosis, as well (I believe) as fibromylagia, ME, and other chronic inflammatory conditions with mast cell involvement.

I plan to run 8 week virtual/online mindfulness meditation workshops of 2hrs, once a week, for those who are not well enough to travel. As these cluster of conditions are triggered by altitude and changes in pressure, flying is out of the question for many, while others are simply bed bound or unable to expose themselves to the outdoors where even pollen can be fatal. I know it sounds outlandish but please google the condition and you'll see I'm not exaggerating.

The sessions will be live, with a recording available for those who miss it. There'll be a Q&A at the end of the session. I mean for this to be a highly interactive experience for us all. The course I'm developing will be highly adapted to our situation (mindfulness at the dinner table, in the kitchen, in the supermarket) and I plan to make a number of mp3s available for download as a bonus.

As with the cookbooks I sell on my site, I plan to allot a certain number of "seats" to people unable to fund their meditation, as well as offering discounts to those on limited incomes.

The Nitty Gritty

I need to raise $2,800 to attend a one week mindfulness meditation course here in the UK:

http://zenways.org/yoga-events.html#3rd%20January%206pm%20-%206th%20January,%202pm;%202014

The perk I'm offering is $75 for a space on my 8 week virtual mindfulness retreat. This course will be priced at $150 for the course in the future.

If I'm unable to raise the full needed funds for the course I'll do a less expensive but less conveniently timed online course (same hours as the other course but over 10 weeks instead of 1), which means I'll be unable to begin teaching courses till May of 2014. The course I'm hoping to book will allow me to begin teaching on Feb 2nd and has the added bonus of being affiliated with Oxford University.

I’m not the only one experiencing an incredible remission – check out New York Times reporter Donna Jackson Nakazawa's own experiences in coming back from paralysis.

Thank you!
