Artist Bio
Although based in Montreal, visual artist Denise Buisman Pilger is a frequent globe-trotter, gathering inspiration for her urban photo-collages along the way. Exhibiting and selling her work prolifically in North America and Europe over the past several years, one of the highlights was a trip to Paris to participate in the ‘2011 Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Art’ at the Carrousel du Louvre.
Her creative practice spans more than a decade, beginning with several years as a professional graphic designer and art director for print media, both in Europe and North America. This sensibility is reflected in her current body of work both aesthetically and technically. From her home-based studio, she produces city-scapes that are graphic, contemporary and yet, nostalgic.
Originally from the Netherlands, Denise has a Bachelor of Arts in Illustration from Willem de Kooning Academy of Arts in Rotterdam, and continues to pursue creative professional development to stay on top of new techniques and materials. She occasionally offers artist talks and technique classes in her community.
Artist Statement
Denise’s work reflects her love of photography, painting and travel configured into graphic pseudo-realities of everyday life filtered through her own whimsical creative lens. Her tableaux are bustling, surreal pastiches of -architectural elements and city life, arranged at unusual angles, irregular scale and not necessarily in their true-to-life configuration.
Her creative process involves digital photo manipulation, image transfer, acrylic photo collage, acrylic paints/-mediums, and other innovative techniques. Working in a variety of scale, Denise creates panels that are graphic, contemporary and yet somehow nostalgic. Often her pieces are black and white with minimalist colour accents, while others abound with colour - her visual vocabulary always unique and always authentic.
In her most recent series – Discoveries: Montreal - Denise explores each of the island city’s 34 boroughs. Venturing out (camera in hand) she has captured the iconic and quirky details that make every borough unique, turning each into a one-of-a-kind mixed media panel. The series offers a rare insight into the distinct flavors of all the ‘little villages’ that make up the island’s rich landscape.
Merging many photographs into a singular image, Denise’s unique impressions of the city capture the urban landscape through the eyes of a new resident, highlighting the often mundane, yet essential elements that make up the living, breathing and evolving ecosystem of the city she has called home since 2009.

About the book
Discoveries: Montreal is a 'series' and although all the pieces can be enjoyed on their own, they are more powerful as a whole. With original artwork being quite expensive, the individual pieces will probably be sold off separately after the initial showing. This art book will be a way to keep the series together and it will make it possible for people to enjoy the entire series at home for years to come.
This 96page book will be perfect bound with minimalist graphic design, featuring only one piece on each spread so each piece gets full attention. The book will also contain information about the artist and the project and some insights in the creation process. This book will look great on your bookshelf or on you coffee table and will make a great conversation starter.
I am currently working on the final pieces, the series is expected to be finished by the end of June 2013. The text for the book is in the editing phase and the graphic design has been started as well. The book will be in both French and in English, just like the city the project is based on. The publishing date for the book depends on the time needed for photography, translation, proof reading and printing, but it has tentatively been set for early September 2013. Keep an eye on the updates for information on the creation of the book and the final pieces of the series.
