Hi! I'm Jennet Ingle, and I've been a professional oboist for nearly 20 years. Being a classical musician in this 21st century has required me to become extremely entrepreneurial, in my approach to my own career and in my advocacy of classical music.

Musicians for Michiana is a brand new chamber music series which partners local classical musicians with community organizations to the benefit of all. Featuring today’s composers alongside classic works from the past, MFM seeks to share our love and knowledge of music with a new audience while giving generously to those groups which make South Bend a vibrant place to live.

Chamber music is about connection. The players, absent a conductor, must rely on each other for cues, tempos, and musical ideas. The more complex the piece, the more deeply the two, or three, or six musicians must work together to understand and present the composer’s ideas to an audience. It’s deeply fulfilling work, and when performed in a small venue for an interested group, can be intensely intimate, rewarding, and transforming. With this project we seek to extend this sense of connection throughout the community.

Over the course of this first year, Musicians for Michiana will be partnering with four different non-profit organizations: Unity Gardens, Hannah and Friends, The Music Village, and Girls on the Run. For each concert, the partner organization will assist us in promotion so that our audience consists partly of music lovers and partly of, say, gardeners who may not be as immersed in this classical world as we. We will give a spectacular performance, with themed programming meaningful to the organization, and at the concert the non-profit will be given a platform to speak to the audience about its vision and needs. The audience donates on a pay-what-you-like basis and all proceeds go directly to that organization.

What We Need:
Of course, professional musicians must be paid. Audiences and musicians should be able to meet and chat and mingle afterwards, ideally while munching on delicious food provided by local restaurants. There must be programs, and publicity for these concerts so we’re not just playing for ourselves. All of these things cost money. Of course, this is where you come in.

We have a budget of $11,215.82. Some has been offered to us as generous in-kind donations. In partnership with The Music Village, we have applied for local grant funding. Our goal with this campaign is to raise $5000. Should we raise more, we can provide WINE at the receptions, or hold seed money for next year’s series. If we should raise less, which would be very sad, we would trim our budget to the barest possible place and still work to make this exciting series a go.

Musicians for Michiana brings classical musicians out of the Morris and into the community, building connections with the groups we work with and the audiences we serve.

Musicians for Michiana is good for the audience. We will be fun to listen to, you will engage with our music and with what we do, and you will be connected with organizations you may not have known about.
