HOW HARD CAN IT BE?

Our dream began as an experiment in homebrewing in a small apartment kitchen on Pine Street in San Francisco. We fell in love with the idea of crafting a product by hand that has the power to bring a community together with every pint.

OUR HISTORY

PSB moved into the historic Bourne Mansion in Pacific Heights during the Spring of 2010 and called this home until the Fall of 2011. Regular weekly brewing led to lots of experimentation and evolved into ten recipes that became part of the core beer list. During “Brew Nights” friends were made, a community was fostered, and our brand began.

By Fall of 2011, we moved into our own dedicated space. We rented a two car garage in Laurel Heights and continued to develop the recipes that had been with us since the beginning. Atom Splitter, a pale ale, became a crowd favorite and we worked very hard at perfecting this recipe, as it would be our first offering.

We received our final brewing license in December of 2012 and Atom Splitter was commercially brewed on January 4, 2013. Our beer debuted the first week of February (one week before SF Beer Week), to a very positive local reception.

OUR INTENTION

Pine Street Brewery was designed so that our beers would appeal to many different palates in many different communities. There is a unique “Pine Street” in almost every city, town, or neighborhood. We intend for our beer, interpretations of classic styles, to unite people across the US one sip at a time.

Our philosophy is to provide a celebration through ales and togetherness. We are active in the community through volunteer work and partnerships with local charities, and strongly believe in supporting local businesses.

ABOUT US (THE FOUNDERS)

Our brewmaster Jay grew up with an innate sense of entrepreneurism– from his lemonade stand at five years old to his home painting company in high school, he feels driven to run his own creative ventures. It was during college that Jay learned about different beers, and after graduating from Ohio State with three degrees (one of them in business) he moved to California, looking for a new project. He trained to be a commercial lender, started Pine Street Records, and released an EP of a friend’s band before eventually moving to San Francisco. In December 2010 during a trip to Boston he wound up on a tasting tour of Harpoon Brewery. He was intrigued to learn that beer consists of only four ingredients - it seemed so easy.

Upon returning home to San Francisco he found a local homebrew shop, SF Brewcraft, and purchased a couple of starter kits. As soon as he fired up the stove and got a whiff of the wort, he knew he had found his next adventure – Pine Street Brewery.

Jay’s visits to SF Brewcraft became more and more regular as he taught himself the art and science of home brewing. He soon developed a mantra, “make simple beer well”. Jay was inspired to master traditional styles instead of getting bogged down with complex ingredients. He moved PSB into the Bourne Mansion (a dilapidated home purchased by a friend’s family) and fine-tuned his brewing skills week by week for two years.

Around that time, Jay’s old friend from SoCal moved to SF with her fiancé, Dave. Dave was an entrepreneur looking for a Friday night hobby, and the two started avidly brewing together. Dave also gave tours of the house as Jay brewed beer. They became good friends and Dave became part of PSB.

We’ve grown enormously as a company since those early Brew Nights, but there is still a long way to go! The ultimate goal for PSB is to be a regional packaging brewery. We want to focus on releasing beers that reflect current consumption trends while honoring traditional brewing values. Our aim is to deepen our roots in the city and maintain a brewing heritage that was established by Anchor Brewing Co. This campaign is just a small step in that direction.

What We Need & What You Get

With our recipes perfected and a commercial brewing space secured, we need tap handles and kegs to keep up with growing demand in San Francisco! With your help we can provide our city with enough green PSB handles to have our beer in every neighborhood.

We've brainstormed hard to come up with great incentives for your donations - just a small token of how much we appreciate your generosity. (Check the gallery for photos of the prizes: http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/pine-street-b...). Your contributions will help us establish our presence in the city, and we hope you’ll be proud to say you helped make it happen!
