Imagine a world where you own a powerful suite of game tools that follows you from platform to platform and allows you to work across platforms and own your product.  

And nothing can take those tools away from you.

Backstory

Anyone who built on my former company Playtomic, or OpenFeint, cancelled features from HeyZap and Mochi etc have been burned by dependencies being baked into our games.

It's time that we as developers take control of our games from end to end including the backend services that have become mandatory and not rely on 3rd party services that can stop existing, get banned by Apple, not support every platform we build on, and relinquish ownership of our data and the player's experience.

What we have so far

Over the last few weeks I've been busy open sourcing and continuing the development of the Game APIs and API Server from Playtomic at http://playtomic.org.

So far we have fully documented and tested APIs for Unity3d, ActionScript 3, HTML5, iOS, Android and C# games, and a self-hosted, easy to install server written in JavaScript (NodeJS), a language many of you know already or can figure out if you have to.

All of this work is being released under a license called the "MIT License" which is one of the most permissive open source licenses and requires only that the license itself be included if you also distribute the work.

What we don't have

There's no end of features software like this could, should, and hopefully will have.  In the immediate future I would like to develop:

  • achievements api
  • saved game api
  • dashboard for management and automating the server setup

Longer term there are lots of neat stuff that should be done:

  • player registration and management
  • general purpose data storage/manipulation
  • push notifications
  • file storage
  • multiplayer
  • analytics

Funding goal and timelines

The timeline on developing these features is open-ended, in large part it depends on the community interest and funding.  The funding goal is just a number - if I can afford to work on this then I will work on this, otherwise it will just be something I play with in my free time.
