As storytellers, we believe to tell stories that surround us, but are seldom noticed. Portrait of a Song is one such story.
Synesthesia is seen as a problem and because of the complexity of understanding the condition, not a lot of people know about it. There has been very few media coverage related to the condition. Through this film we are trying to explore and understand one of the types of synesthesias (out of over 60 of them) - chromesthesia.
Because of the limited audience of Art-house genre, it is very difficult to make a film for masses with subjects like this. We want the story to be pure and true to the nature of the condition, rather than making it sellable. The challenge is to make it interesting at the same time. You want to know about something, but do not want to drag yourself through the film. Hopefully, this film finds a perfect balance between the two and is true to the condition and its genre.
About the Film
Logline: The perfect life of middle aged couple, Alex and Emily, is shaken when the husband loses his chromesthesia in an accident and fails to cope with it.
Genre: Art House Drama
Running Time: 15 min.
Synopsis of the story:
Portrait of a song is the story of Alex, a middle-aged freelance graphic designer who designs covers for music labels. He suffers from chromesthesia (sound to colour Synesthesia) that helps in his designs.
In an accident (electric shock), Alex loses his chromesthesia and then is unable to cope with his life. Since his condition helped him with his work, he now feels disabled and falls into depression. His wife Emily, at first does not acknowledge that Alex has any problem. It is only later that she begins to understand her husband and the story unfolds by delving into their relationship further.
The film integrates music and colour heavily from the beginning till the end to virtually depict Alex’s chromesthesia. It is this integration that makes the film an art-house drama.
About the Director
A Bachelors degree in Mass Media (Advertising) from India, I came to the UK to pursue my masters in Film and TV Directing. I always try to do something new and challenging. As a student, I have directed films relating to Foster caring, showing relationship between man and animal and even made a short musical. Previously I've worked as a designer, visualiser, and Assistant Director in India.
With this film I've tried to integrate my love for colour and design, with my interest in music in a unique way that acquaints its audience with chromesthesia.
The Budget
The overall budget required to produce this film is £2000. The following pie chart shows the breakdown of the budget.
Other Ways You Can Help
If you can't help us with money and still want to get involved, then you can do so in two ways.
1. You can submit your digital arts and sketches to us, which can be featured in the film. Plus you get the credit in the film. :)
2. If you have a song that is fresh and is sitting at a corner in your computer, then do send us a private link to it. If we like it, who knows it could be one of the 6 featuring songs in the film and make it to our very own soundtrack CD.
