The Reptile Guy's Rescue and Education Center
My name is Mike Hopcraft and I have been working with reptiles for over 18 years. I opened my first rescue and education center on November 10th 2012 after I ran out of space in my home to house all of the rescues and surrenders that were being turned in.
My facility seemed big when I first opened but the rescues and surrenders kept coming in. In the first year alone we have taken in over 240 reptiles, amphibians and arachnids in various conditions. Some are very healthy and can be adopted out but others come in very sick or injured and need extensive rehabilitation.
I am now in a situation where I am quickly running out of space but the animals keep coming in. With the exotics industry only growing, so will the number of animals needing homes.
We also have some larger animals at an off site facility that we need to get back in our care such as an American alligator and large Burmese pythons. We can only get these animals back in to our care if we can attain a larger facility.
Our goal is to raise $75000 by Feb 1st, 2014. If we can do this, we will move in to a larger location that is better suited for our rescue. We will be building large habitats for all of our rescues and surrenders to live in. A large portion of it will go towards a gigantic turtle pond as turtles are the number one animal that is turned in to our rescue. We will also be building a proper quarantine room with a separate entrance to avoid any cross contamination issues.
If we can reach this goal or even come close to it, we will be securing the future of countless animals that would otherwise have nowhere else to go. There are not many actual rescue centers for reptiles.
Not only is our facility a rescue but it is also an education center to help teach people about these unique creatures and about responsible pet ownership.
