What is Rhapsody Collective?
About a year ago, I had a dream of bringing a group of young
artists together to create new works from the very beginning and devise plays
under one common theme. Well, 36 artists
were brought together and we presented six plays with the theme of Dreams. After a successful run of sold-out, one-night only presentations,
a new ensemble of artists, containing both old and new members, came together
and we’re eager to share seven new plays with you. This Cycle’s theme: The
Seven Deadly Sins.
Rhapsody Collective
is a group of young theater artists dedicated to creating new works from the
ground up. Rhapsody Collective strives to foster new and innovative ideas in a
safe environment of peers. The goal is to create, not produce. Over the course
of a cycle, the ensemble of actors, directors, playwrights, and dramaturgs are
randomly broken up into teams to create a brand new piece. The challenge for
each team is “freedom within restrictions.” Each cycle has a theme each piece
must incorporate. Additionally, the roles created must be written specifically
for the actors on their team. At the end of the cycle, each play will be
presented in one harmonious rhapsody.
Since October, we have met as an ensemble to learn about who
we are as individual theater artists. We have now been divided into our 7 Seven
Deadly Sin Teams and have been steadily devising our seven diverse plays. We
can’t wait to show just how sinful we are in Cycle 2!
Why We Need Your Help:
In order to bring our seven pieces to life, we need your
help. This May, we will present our seven teams’ plays in workshop style. Our
goal is to charge a suggested donation as admission so you can see all seven
presentations and not feel you have to pick and choose. And that’s why you’re
here! The more we raise, the bigger the space, the more people we can share our
work with!
We need to raise funds to:
·
Rent rehearsal spaces for all of the seven teams
·
Rent a week-long residency space at the new home
of Alchemical Theatre Laboratory
·
Print programs
·
Order and print postcards and posters
If we exceed our goal (which would be awesome!), those funds
will go to future Rhapsody Collective projects and the start of Cycle 3 in the
Fall of 2014! Just look at all the perks you could collect just by donating to
Rhapsody Collective!
