May 5, 2013

We want to thank you all for your support and contributions during this fundraiser! It's been about 8 weeks since 5 of us came up with the idea of having the Project Rhino event and we are extremely happy about how tremendously helpful the community has been in providing for the preservation of the rhino population in Africa.

Now, we are planning how we spend the funds raised with local non profit, Project Rhino KZN, but in the mean time, if you want to get involved or contribute please contact projectrhinocharleston@gmail.com to find out how!

Thanks again!

- The Project Rhino Charleston team

 ******************************************

Being a group of mostly South African transplants here in South Carolina, the subject of rhino poaching, which has devastated nearly 60% of the species in Africa, got heated quickly one night around the fire outside Clint's house.

Look guys, this is nasty business. These magnificent rhinos are disappearing because they are being shot for their coveted horn and left for dead. Even though the horn is made of keratin – the same as your fingernails  - it is believed falsely that rhino horn can cure the common cold and even cancer.  The Asian black market is paying more than cocaine for this distinctive horn, which sends military style ops sneaking across the South African borders for big payoffs.

Having grown up with the privilege of seeing wild rhino in South Africa, where 93% of the rhino population exists, we agreed it is definitely one that should be extended to future generations. Luckily that night on Folly Beach there were no planes leaving and we had no weapons, but we were ready for battle and thus Project Rhino Charleston was founded by Graham MacDonald and Clint Weimann.

Our goal is to raise more than $2,000 for Project Rhino KZN (Kwazulu Natal) in recognition of their track record in bringing rhino conservation groups together and by directly funding and equipping anti-poaching units on the frontlines. Funds go to units who need fuel, weapons and strategic support. We have already raised over $4,000 ++ with online and offline donations!

We are hosting an event on James Island. Saturday, May 4, 2013 from 4-8pm at 1213 Ft. Lamar Rd.  Expect a traditional South African potjie cooking competition, more great food and live music. $15 ticket secures your ticket for food and drink. Alcoholic drinks are available for purchase. Map and parking details etc. will be emailed to you, or details are posted on facebook.

You can help by making a donation or by buying a ticket to the event. We have a real opportunity to help anti-poaching units like Jabulani Ngubane's who are on the frontline risking their lives everyday for rhino. Project Rhino KZN funds his group among others and we actually talked to Jabulani when researching non profits and he says: help!

There are other ways you can help! Spread the word! Share the rhino story with folks who don't know. If you have artwork or a service you can donate, we'd love to hear from you for our silent auction and raffle.

Thanks for taking the time to check out our project.

Project Rhino KZN is a South African charity. 100% of the funds will go to their cause.
