STRETCH GOALS:
Thank you so much for all of your love, support, and donations!
Any additional money raised will be invested directly in the storefront to build more new fixtures and add even more new inventory.
What is Rock Paper Scissors?
On September 8, 2013, our brand new art supply and Cincinnati-focused record store will join the list of small businesses in historic Over-The-Rhine that have been created by and for members of the creative community of Cincinnati.
Art supplies:
Our new inventory will be selected with the needs of area art students, local small businesses, and working and commercial artists like illustrators, sign-painters, and tattoo artists in mind. We will also devote a large section of the supply store to locally made materials and tools, including handmade willow charcoal, walnut ink, sketchbooks, and leather pencil bags.
Local music releases & band merchandise:
We’ll carry a selection of CDs, tapes, and vinyl of all genres. We will also carry merchandise like posters, stickers, t-shirts, and more.
Workshops and in-store events:
We will offer a diverse menu of workshops with topics ranging from screen printing to audio recording, and present monthly gallery openings every Final Friday.
About the owners
Adam Petersen and Lindsay Nehls
We started working together as members of the artists’ group The Marburg Collective in 2009, with a mutual interest in creating spaces and curating events that provide avenues through which people feel inspired and encouraged to express themselves.
Building on our experience as event coordinators, curators, teachers, exhibiting and performing artists, and our respective college educations in music performance [CCM] and fine arts [DAAP], we are now ready to embrace Rock Paper Scissors as a brick-and-mortar home for our efforts.
Alisha Budkie
The space at 1301 Main Street is currently home to Smartfish Studio & Sustainable Supply, owned by Alisha Budkie. Since starting her own store two years ago, Alisha has been very active in the OTR community, including coordinating Second Sunday on Main. She will continue to be involved and present in Rock Paper Scissors while shifting her focus to her footwear business. In a few months, she will be leaving Cincinnati to collaborate with other shoemakers and pursue further training. But she’ll be back!
Where will Rock Paper Scissors be located?
Rock Paper Scissors will be located at 1301 Main Street, just a few blocks from Cincinnati landmarks like the Art Academy of Cincinnati and Washington Park. Main Street and the surrounding Over-The-Rhine historic district is the heart of visual art and music culture in our beautiful city, and the ideal neighborhood for us to call home.
What will the money be used for?
New inventory:
In addition to carrying more materials and tools made by local artists, we will make an initial investment in new inventory. We will build upon Smartfish’s current selection to meet the needs of a broader audience.
New display racks:
To house and display the expanded supply inventory and our new selection of local music, we will be working with local designers and carpenters to make new display racks and shelving.
Local music listening station:
We’ll be adding a built-in listening station so that customers may preview music before making a selection, which will also help us promote local musicians.
New signage:
We are so excited to be working with local artist Lizzy Duquette who will be screen printing and hand-painting all of the signage for our store, and helping us transform the space.
Why does our city need a locally-focused art supply and record store?
By having a comprehensive local music selection, a supply store, a workshop space, and a gallery under one roof, we aim to facilitate interactivity among our diverse community. We will serve artists by providing a resource center designed to inspire, inform, and equip, which will be useful to everyone from emerging artists and experienced professionals, to people new to the city that want to learn about the local art scene.
