A big THANK YOU to all
of our wonderful supporters. We're past
the 50% mark and that is all because of you!
Despite Indiegogo’s disclaimer at the top, the funds for this campaign
are in fact restricted; explanation is below.
Campaign update:
The Cabrini
Movement™ began on January 14, 2014 after Mother Cabrini High School, a 115
year-old institution located in the Washington Heights area of Manhattan and
dedicated to the secondary education of young women, announced its closure by
the end of the current academic year. This movement consists of the
wonderful students currently enrolled, parents of students, and alumnae with
the support of state and local politicians.
The original goal of
this campaign was to save Mother Cabrini High School and use the $100,000 target
amount to gain leverage with the sisters who own the school in
an effort to change their minds. On January 27th, representatives of the
Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (the “MSSHJ” or the “Sisters”)
met with the Cabrini Movement™ and concerned alumnae, to confirm the imminent
closing of Mother Cabrini High School.
In an emotional final attempt to convince the Sisters to reverse their
decision, the meeting was held at the original shrine, which now serves as the
school’s library.
Failure was never an
option for us. However, given that the
school will not remain open, the funds will go directly toward
transitioning the current 200+ students at Mother Cabrini to other
parochial schools in the area, as originally stated. Currently,
75% of the school’s students are on financial aid. Many parochial schools
are unable to honor these scholarships, as they were funded by the MSSHJ.
This is the new goal of the campaign: Help the 200+ current students of Mother Cabrini
High School complete their education as they started it.
Your donation will
continue a legacy of moving young women from culturally diverse backgrounds to
strong careers and futures. Securing these girls with the education they
need is the first and most urgent step of this campaign. The Cabrini Movement™ has no intentions
of stopping there, however. With the
blessing and cooperation of the Sisters and the school's administration, the
movement is taking the necessary steps to establish a 501(c)(3) non-profit
organization in order to aggressively continue its fundraising efforts.
Your gift will now be
the foundation of something amazing. Despite the high school not being there,
Cabrini Movement™ will continue to
secure the best quality education for young women in Washington Heights for
years to come.
What We Need &
What You Get
We still need to raise
$100,000 in 30 days. This is
still a kick-starter campaign to raise awareness for our goal. 75%
of the students are currently on financial aid, paid for by the Sisters. Most schools are not honoring these
scholarships.
The school has
confirmed that a sum of $300,000 will successfully transfer the students
who are currently on non-transferable scholarships to another parochial
school. Much less daunting than the
original $7 million dollars we needed to save the school, right? We can do this!
Deadlines for
enrollment of other schools are fast approaching, so we need your
help now.
As Mother Cabrini High
School is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, your gift is 100% tax-deductible. We
would love to offer you a Cabrini sweatshirt, a sticker, or a button in
exchange for your wonderful gift, but we need every dime to raise money for the
current students. If you're out there and can give us this as an in-kind
donation, we would appreciate it beyond words!
The Impact
Your gift will be a
great boost to our efforts. Our $100,000 total would draw more attention
in the media and social media and give us the leverage we need to reach the
finish line and secure the $300,000 needed to help the students continue their
excellent education. Your donation will ensure that a legacy that is more
than a century old will continue in New York City.
Other Ways You Can
Help
We appreciate your giving at any level.
Every cent counts. Times are tough these
days so we understand that not everyone can give a gift. We do hope
you'll help us by using the hashtag #cabrinimovement on Twitter, Instagram, and
Facebook and using the Indiegogo share tools so that your family, friends, and
co-workers may consider supporting the Cabrini Movement™. Remember, your gift will now be the
foundation of something historic.
We need you now more than ever before.
Thank you.
