Bike Racks at Every Shaker Destination
This campaign will provide 25 bike racks at 12 Shaker Heights destinations: strong, elegant inverted 'U' bike racks made by Metro Metal Works, a local firm. And they'll be bright Shaker red!
The campaign can't succeed without your help - in the form of a healthy pledge towards the project. We know all of Shaker Heights will love seeing racks in places that don't offer riders a place to lock up their bicycles. Everyone can help!
This is the kind of project that puts Shaker Heights on the map as a bike friendly community. The campaign also supports one of Bike Shaker's goals: "to provide better and more bike racks in the city of Shaker Heights".
What We Need & What You Get
Here's the nitty gritty:
We need $4,000 for 25 bike racks at 12 locations:
-
Community Building, 2 parking spaces (1 ‘U’ rack)
-
Gridley Park, 4 parking spaces (2 ‘U’ racks)
-
Lower Shaker Lake, 6 parking spaces (3 ‘U’ racks)
-
Launch House, 6 parking spaces (3 ‘U’ racks)
-
Shaker Family Center, 6 parking spaces (3 ‘U’ racks)
-
Hathaway Brown, 4 parking spaces (2 ‘U’ racks)
-
St. Dominic, 6 parking spaces (3 ‘U’ racks)
-
Shaker Historical Society, 4 parking spaces (2 ‘U’ racks)
-
Bicycle Boulevard, 2 parking spaces (1 ‘U’ rack)
-
Hanna Perkins Center, 2 parking spaces (1 ‘U’ rack)
-
Shaker Heights Youth Center, 4 parking spaces (2 ‘U’ racks)
- Shaker Plaza (Cleveland Running), 4 parking spaces (2 'U' racks)
Please visit the 'Bike Friendly' Shaker Heights Google Map to see all of these locations. Destinations that need bicycle parking have a red marker. Destinations with bike parking are marked with a blue 'P'.
Contribute and you'll be invited to a 'lock up' party at the end of the campaign at the Shaker Historical Society.
In the event we don't make the entire $4,000, we will purchase as many bike racks as we can with funds raised. We'll prioritize the rack placement based on use.
But if we we make more than our $4,000 goal, we can install more racks in each location or at other locations! So a location that is planning on receiving a single rack could see two, etc.
A unique feature of this campaign is that it allows you to support two good causes - biking and Metro Metal Works - with a single contribution. Metro Metal Works is a non-profit organization that "designs, manufactures, sells and installs bicycle racks
while training individuals from an under-utilized workforce, resulting
in their employment and self-sufficiency." It was recently featured in the Plain Dealer.
Your contribution will be made to the Shaker Historical Society; Bike Shaker is a Society committee which is managing the purchase and installation of the bike racks.
Safe and Secure Lockups for All Riders
Shaker Heights is pursuing recognition as a 'Bicycle Friendly Community' with the League of American Bicyclists (LAB). LAB states in its recommendations for the city:
"Increase the amount of high quality bicycle parking at popular destinations throughout the community. Residents of multi-family dwellings should have access to high quality bike parking as well. Regulations that require bike parking, e.g. for new developments, can secure private funding. See the bicycle parking ordinances of Madison, Wisconsin and Santa Cruz, California. Also consider adding some artistic bike racks to enhance the sense of place of your community."
