Slumptown is a coffee shop in which the last remaining human, Dave, is training a robot apprentice, Al, to take over and then train others. Over the course of a week, we see Dave train Al in not just how to make coffee, but how to be human. How to form a relationship with us.
And in the end, Ivette, a Slumptown regular must decide between David and Al. man and android. Unpredictable humanity, or predictable benevolence.
We've read Kurzweil, we've read Heinlein. We know Moore's law. We know the day is nearing when sentient robotic humanoids walk with us, talk with us, live with us. But there are so many unanswered questions about how their lives will really integrate with ours. How much of us will be in them? How much of them will be in us?
There are many stories that attempt tackle this from a macro level, but Slumptown approaches it from a very specific viewpoint through a single human focal lens. It asks a very simple question: what will our relationship be with them, can we love each other.
Although our crew has forfeited salaries because of their passion for the project, making a film, even a short one, is still an expensive proposition. Your donations will be used towards our budget, including:
Production: August 22 -> August 25
Post-Production: Late August, September 2013
Festival Submission: Starting September 2013
I visited my cousins, where their wealthy father gave them money to have their own backyard skate-shop, and the weather was so amazing that you could skate nearly any day of the year.
I watched movies of California, where Kodachrome prints brought the Golden State to life, no, bigger than. California was a dream. Silicon Valley, Hollywood,Ventura and the PCH.
The myth of California is so big it can't contain itself. It flows over, it mixes, it turns inside out, and distorts. And lurking behind the glow and blue skies is the real California.
This is what I want to shoot. A Kodachrome piece of perfection that reveals its cracks through the narrative. A golden dream that lets just enough reality through its filter to raise the hair on the back of our necks without ever explaining why. This is Slumptown and its Inexorable March of Progress.
