What is Stazione di Topolò - Postaja Topolove
Stazione Topolò - Postaja Topolove is a laboratory for the arts and for thinking that focuses its activities in the small village of Topolò / Topolove, in the municipality of Grimacco (Udine), at the extreme border between Italy and Slovenia.
Topolò paid a high price after the second world war because of the Iron Curtain, the cost of which was the emigration of 90% of its inhabitants as a consequence of the restrictions to normal aspects of life imposed by the post-1945 political strategies on the area. Topolò is somehow a symbol of the contradictions of the twentieth century, with its isolation, typical of the mountain villages, reinforced by its "damned border." It is in such a wounded place that art was thought to have the opportunity to express its ethical value, detached from its entertaining and worldly aspects. Stazione di Topolò - Postaja Topolove – is not a festival and does not include traveling shows but only site-specific projects. In Topolò, experimentation is rooted in tradition and into a worn out culture that is still very rich and archaic. It is not a show and there are no exhibition times. Everything takes place in the squares, in the streets, in the fields, in the woods and in private homes, using what is available. In this way, Topolò is neither directly affected by the events, nor is it passive to them, but rather the driving force behind them.
The people who work in Topolò lodge in the houses around of the village, living as locals. In Topolò for many decades hospitality was forbidden. The roles of the artist and the audience are mixed; many projects have been realised through a collaboration between the artists and the guests of the village, or between artists and local children, giving everyone a leading role. Everything takes place in a very informal way.
Stazione di Topolò has drawn the attention of the international media who are fascinated by the utopian ideals of this project which combines art, thought, social life and economic revival. The organisers are gathered in the not-for-profit Association Topolò-Topoluove.
Why help Stazione di Topolò - Postaja Topolove?
Since 2004, the Friuli Venezia Giulia region has supported Stazione Topolò - Postaja Topolove with a small grant which has guaranteed its survival. In 2011 funding was reduced by 33%. For 2013, the Regional Council has chosen to reduce drastically its cultural fundings: they are now cut by 50%. With the remaining sum it is no longer possible to support any activity, not even to cover the basic expenses. All the funds raised by this campaign will be used exclusively in the production of cultural activities taking place during the year and supported by Stazione di Topolò - Postaja Topolove.
Cos'è la Stazione di Topolò - Postaja Topolove
Stazione di Topolò - Postaja Topolove è un laboratorio per le arti e per il pensiero che concentra le sue attività nel piccolo borgo di Topolò/Topolove, frazione del comune di Grimacco (Udine), all'estremo confine tra Italia e Slovenia. Topolò ha pagato un prezzo altissimo nel dopoguerra a causa della cortina di ferro, un prezzo che è ben visibile nella perdita, per emigrazione, del 90% dei suoi abitanti a causa dei divieti a una vita normale imposti dalla sua posizione geografica e dalle strategie politiche post 1945. Topolò è in qualche modo un simbolo delle contraddizioni del secolo breve, con il suo isolamento, tipico dei borghi montani, accentuato dal "maledetto confine". Proprio in luogo tanto ferito si è pensato che l'arte avesse occasione di esprimere il suo valore etico, lontano dall'aspetto mondano e di intrattenimento. La Stazione non è un festival, non accoglie spettacoli itineranti ma solo progetti pensati per il luogo.
A Topolò la sperimentazione si innesta sulla tradizione e su un tessuto culturale molto provato ma ricchissimo e arcaico.
Non è una mostra, non c'è alcun momento espositivo. Tutto si svolge nelle piazzette, lungo le vie, nei prati, nel bosco, nelle case private, utilizzando quello che c'è, senza stravolgere il luogo che diventa il motore principale e non lo scenario passivo di quanto accade.
Chi opera a Topolò viene ospitato nelle case del paese, vive come un abitante del paese. A Topolò per molti decenni l'ospitalità era interdetta.
I progetti vedono spesso la collaborazione di altri artisti e ricercatori presenti in paese, dei ragazzi della zona, mescolando i ruoli di artista e spettatore e facendo di tutti dei protagonisti. Tutto si svolge in maniera molto informale.
La Stazione ha suscitato l'interesse dei media internazionali, affascinati dall'utopia del progetto che unisce arte, pensiero, vita sociale, rinascita economica.
Gli organizzatori sono radunati nell'Associazione Topolò-Topoluove, associazione no-profit.
Perché chiediamo fondi?
Dal 2004 la Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia ha sostenuto Stazione di Topolò/Postaja Topolove con un finanziamento che, pur ridotto rispetto a quello di un festival, ne ha garantito la sopravvivenza. Nel 2011 il finanziamento è stato ridotto del 33%. Per il 2013, la Giunta Regionale ha scelto di dare un taglio netto proprio alla voce Cultura e la riduzione è stata ancora più massiccia: il 50%. Con la cifra rimasta non è possibile svolgere alcuna attività, nemmeno per coprire le spese primarie.
I fondi che giungeranno saranno esclusivamente utilizzati nella realizzazione delle attività culturali che si svolgono durante l'intero arco dell'anno sotto l'egida di Stazione di Topolò/Postaja Topolove.
