Our Mission:
Space Idea Tapes wishes to raise money for their third "SPIT FEST" { "SP"ace "I"dea "T"apes FEST} This is an annual festival that has for the last two consecutive years been held privately at house venues, and this year aims to become more public and offer more awareness to the community of its artists. SPIT FEST is not only a music festival of extreme and outsider artists, but a community event that will provide cultural opportunities for the public with a market, and visual art from notable regional artists. The festival also includes a potluck-BBQ inviting everyone to bring food to grill, share and eat together.
History:
Space Idea Tapes has been releasing cassette tapes steadily and holding shows in public venues as well as house shows since 2010. There has been no outside funding other than hard-earned money out of the pockets of those directly involved. We've also been a contact point for traveling artists on tour from all over the country.
The majority of the artists on the label are originally based out of Columbia, South Carolina. And although some acts are from other areas of the United States, all of the acts are moderately to extremely obscure outsider music, experimental electronic, harsh noise, conceptual compositional, etc.
Importance for Columbia, Why you should donate...
Without Space Idea Tapes operating as a vehicle to fuel these artists and inspire others, the town would not only suffer a great loss of thriving culture that rivals the more tourist based music and art championed by the town, but would also lose an avenue for national and international acts of the same liking.
The booking behind Space Idea Tapes is one that has accumulated from over a decade of d.i.y. house show and alternative venue booking agents involved with the label, as well as referencing rings of trust that direct artists towards the Carolinas. In normal booking situations we are bypassed for geopolitical reasons of being out of driving range in route from North Carolina to Atlanta Georgia. The label's vital relevance extends far beyond its releases and is at the heart of a cultural and night life endeavor for our city.
In holding the festival in a new experimental venue, Conundrum Music Hall, Space Idea Tapes can have more people involved with more out of town acts from the region. We've already booked over 30 acts from the following cities to play : Richmond VA, Asheville NC, Chicago IL, Boston Mass, Washington D.C., New York City and more... We are projecting about 30 acts playing the festival, making around 15-18 out of towners traveling to play.
All donations will go to the travel expenses of the out of town acts. The admission fee will be reduced to 5$ on July Fourth if this campaign is successful.
Why Cassettes?
Without the preservation of certain mediums, music trends towards monopoly battles between computer developers and provides uncertain and shaky future for artists of not only the present and the future, but the past in its entirety as well. The label has released over twenty albums on this format, and continues to pursue new music locally, and around the country. Cassettes hold a certain vitality and collectible nature that cannot be matched with any digital format. Cassettes are also cheap, and easy to make yourself unlike having to rely on record labels, mastering/studio engineers, and other expensive costs that struggling or emerging artists have to absorb.
Please consider this fundraiser to support your friends, local art and music, and myself for the third-annual Space Idea Tapes Festival on July 4th, 2013 at Conundrum Music Hall.
Your time, and efforts are greatly appreciated. If you cannot donate to this campaign consider volunteering, or contributing your time or work to this. Please get in contact!
