What is SUPOCHO?
SUPOCHO (Support the Poor Charity Organization) was started in 2010 and is a non-profit located in Nkhata Bay, Malawi. SUPOCHO began from a vision by a local Malawian, Webster Nyirenda. He saw the need to help orphans and vulnerable young people become computer literate.
The average Malawian earns only $178 dollars per year. In a country where the vast majority of the population has no computer skills, SUPOCHO is empowering 13-22 year olds orphans and other vulnurable young people with the ability to differentiate themselves and secure employment. By gaining employment and becoming economially self-reliant, these young people will have a much better chance at improving their quality of life.
SUPOCHO has classes on basic computing skills, typing, Microsoft Office Suite, and lessons on using the internet. We also provide free access to computers and the Internet for the local community.
We Need Your Help!
The school at SUPOCHO was openend in January 2013. Great progress has been made, but to ensure the success of the program we need your help. In Malawi, a little bit of money goes a long way. The funds go directly to the operating expenses and towards more equipment for SUPOCHO.
- A $15 dollar donation (or the price of a meal and a drink) covers all operating costs for a day
- A $25 dollar donation covers power or internet for an entire month
- A $40 dollar donation covers building rent for a whole month
- A $75 dollar donation ensures SUPOCHO can keep one of their two teachers staffed for another month.
If we meet our fundraising goal, SUPOCHO will be able to continue teaching vulnurable young people for another 6 months.
If we surpass our fundraising goal, the money will go into a fund to build our own building. Currently, SUPOCHO is operating at capacity. With a new building and more equipment we can impact more and more vulnurable youth in the community.
