Support Tasia! Fight Union-busting!
IWW member Tasia is a union Organizer who works at Insomnia Cookies. Tasia has been actively building the union in her store. She went public and disclosed her IWW affiliation to management on December 7, 2013. On March 9, 2014, she was suspended without pay for a month in retaliation for her union activity! The union has filed Unfair Labor Practice charges against the company with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). Insomnia, which misclassifies its bike delivery workers as "independent contractors," pays workers rock-bottom wages, while selling cookies for $1.35 that cost the company about .10 to make. The IWW has been conducting a union organizing drive ever since four Insomnia employees declared a strike in August '13; their demands included $15/hr, health care and a union. The company's response was to fire the striking workers, who joined the IWW. Insomnia agreed to give about $4,000 in back pay to the strikers to settle charges the union brought at the NLRB. The company also pledged to post a notice stating it would not retaliate against workers for engaging in protected activity, including joining the union and going on strike! Despite this Insomnia targeted Tasia for retaliation, imposing a severe penalty based on vague and false claims that she was insubordinate and had a "bad attitude," which supposedly had been a problem for a long time. Tasia had never been so much as warned for anything before Insomnia suspended her without pay, posing a direct threat to her livelihood. All funds collected in this campaign will augment the union's efforts to support Tasia and other workers who face retaliation for their union activity at Insomnia.
