(Excerpt from NY Times)
Search crews on Thursday clawed through the wreckage of a collapsed building that housed several factories making clothing for European and American consumers, with the death toll rising to at least 238 and many others still unaccounted for.
The collapse of the Rana Plaza building in Savar, an industrial suburb of Dhaka, the capital, came only five months after a horrific fire at a similar facility prompted leading multinational brands to pledge to work to improve safety in the country’s booming but poorly regulated garment industry.
By early Thursday, police officials reported that more than 1,000 of the 2,500 workers were injured, with many of them still trapped. Soldiers, paramilitary police officers, firefighters and other citizens were enlisted in the search for survivors and bodies. Brig. Gen. Mohammed Siddiqul Alam Shikder, who is overseeing rescue operations, said the death toll had risen to 238 by Thursday night, The Associated Press reported.
What We Need
Virtually all of the victims and their families are very poor, and in all likelihood, the victims were the sole earners in the family. These families are going to need help with burial and other rites, as well as temporary support for day to day food, shelter etc; until the government or the private sector do something.
Every penny generated from this campaign will go to a reputable relief organization that is working with the survivors and the families of the victims for their rehabilitation .
We are currently finalising our liason with organisations that are setting up funds for the families.
I have set up a paypal account under my name, and as soon as we reach the target, I will send the funds to a local charity.
I cannot offer you anything in return. Just trying to do my part to help fellow human beings.. If you want proof of the donations going to the charity, I will be more than happy to send you records of that transaction.
Partner Organization
Preliminary reports indicate that the medical and financial needs of survivors and their familes are urgent, and immediate. Our funds will be devoted to their medium and longer-term medical needs, and go to the Center for Rehabilitation & Paralyzed in Bangladesh, Smile and Sajida foundation.
