Susquehanna Service
Dogs:
A Service Dog’s Journey Begins
Summary: Support
Susquehanna Service Dog Eva and her future puppies to become service dogs that
will change the lives of children and adults with disabilities.
Eva has arrived at Susquehanna Service Dogs! She is a
beautiful black lab from Guide Dogs Queensland in Australia, and she’s going to
be making her home with SSD in Pennsylvania.
SSD is very excited that Eva is here. She’s going to be the start
of a new line of service dog puppies. Eva’s puppies will grow up to be
assistance dogs throughout North America. Some will become balance dogs who
assist their person to walk. Some will become hearing dogs who alert their
person to sounds, such as the doorbell, the person’s name, an alarm clock, and
the oven timer. Some will assist veterans, and others will assist people who
have autism. Some will become guide dogs. Each service dog will support their
person to become more independent.
Your donation will make it possible for Eva and her future puppies
to change people’s lives.
The Ultimate Impact
of Your Donation
The people who have received service dogs from SSD say it
best:
Chris and SSD Samee
Mae
“Samee Mae is amazing in
every way and more. Things were dark for me in many ways after the war. My
family could only do so much. They are perfect, but I needed a different kind
of friend. One that was so devoted to me that nothing could get between us.
Amazing does not begin to cover what Samee is. She is my savior. Thank you
to EVERYONE who made this happen!”
Mary Alice and SSD TJ
“I remember vividly my first steps outside
to bring in the mail with TJ. When we got back into the house, I put my arms
around him and cried with joy. The sense of independence was so overwhelming.”
More About Eva
Eva is a part of the new Assistance Dogs International North
America Breeding Cooperative (ABC), a group dedicated to producing the highest
quality service dogs who are able to successfully assist people with
disabilities. Susquehanna Service Dogs recently joined ABC.
What is ABC?
The Assistance Dogs International North America Breeding
Cooperative is a cooperative breeding program based on the concept of group
breeding. Members assign their best broods (female dog) and studs (male dog) to
the co-op. A certain number of the puppies will stay with the organization that
whelps the litter, and the other puppies will be distributed to the other
members of the co-op. This group breeding method vastly improves the dogs’
genetics, which ultimately means that our service dogs will be even higher
quality—the best dogs for the job.
About Susquehanna
Service Dogs
Since 1993, Susquehanna Service Dogs has placed over 220
service dogs with men, women, and children with disabilities in Pennsylvania
and the surrounding states. SSD dogs assist children and adults with mobility,
hearing, psychiatric disabilities, and autism, as well as military veterans.
Each dog is professionally trained to meet the individual needs of their
partner. Dogs may complete tasks such as opening doors, picking up dropped
objects, assisting with daily dressing, or pulling a manual wheelchair.
SSD is fully accredited by Assistance Dogs International and
is a program of the United Way of the Capital Region. SSD relies on donations
and a dedicated group of volunteers, many of whom raise dogs that go on to
change lives.
