What we're up to
Swale is a one-of-a-kind platform that encourages New Yorkers to connect with edible ecology, and asks us to reconsider our collective use of land and waterways. Swale hosts public tours and educational workshops, and welcomes around 500 public visitors daily. In 2016 Swale docked at public piers in the South Bronx, Governors Island and Brooklyn Bridge Park, hosting over 60,000 visitors, 1,000 park tours, 60 school groups, and 30 free public programs. In 2017, Swale has returned to NYC and needs your help in order to continue to serve the public. Swale is the only water-based public food forest in the country (that we know of!).
Impact of your contribution
Our team is working tirelessly to bring school groups, public officials, experts, and local stakeholders together to reimagine the ecological opportunities of our city. If you contribute to this campaign, you will
- Help keep Swale free and open to the public
- Make it easier for all New Yorkers connect with the food we eat
- Empower urban residents to become stewards of parks and public spaces
- Enable youth to experience urban agriculture
- Advance grassroots policy to bring perennial agriculture to New York City's public spaces
Your contribution is a direct investment in the vibrancy of your city, and is something that you can actively enjoy.

What we need, specifically
In order for the barge to stay free and accessible to you, your friends and your family, we need:
- $5,000 so that we can build the curriculum for 300 school workshops across New York City
- $10,000 to build a proper greenhouse that would extend our season through the winter
- $6,000 to expand our perennial gardens
- $6,000 so that we can travel to more public piers and more people can experience Swale
