Thanks so much for your support
The campaign is over, and we are very grateful for all the support we received. The new home for The Air Dock will be: TheAirDock.com
There you will be able to pre-order your Air Dock if you didn't get to during the campaign.
What is the Air Dock?
The Air dock is a wireless charging car dock for your smartphone. It holds your phone with no clips and no clamps
![]()
It wirelessly charges your phone without plugging the phone into anything.
![]()
How does it work?
The face of the Air Dock is a micro suction foam that magically holds your phone in place. Inside the Air Dock are magnets that pull the phone tightly into the foam face.

The Qi wireless charger is built into the dock. Any phone that supports Qi charging will automatically charge once placed on the Air Dock
Will my phone work on the Air
Dock?
There are many phones that will work on the Air Dock. We are working on testing more and more phones all the time. Right now we can recommend a handful of phones to be used on the Air Dock. (We know there are more, but haven't tested them yet)

How does this magical foam work?
The micro suction foam face is pretty cool. Imagine a whole bunch of tiny little suction cups. That's what we have used to hold phones to the Air Dock.
Full size suction cups need a smooth glossy surface to stick to. Similarly the micro suction foam needs a smooth glossy phone to hold onto.
Any phone with a glossy back will stick great to the micro suction foam. If your phone isn't glossy on the back, then it's just a simple matter of putting it in a case that is smooth and glossy.
Why use magnets to hold the
phones?
Not all phones have a glossy back, and not all people want their phones in a case. To help make more phones work on the Air Dock we have added strategically placed magnets just under the surface of the Air Dock.
Some phones(and tablets), including the Nexus 5, and the Nexus 7 have little metal discs embedded in the back plate of the phone. Our magnets line up with these metal discs, and pull quite nicely on them.
Many phones have metal in their backs (the Galaxy phones all have some metal), so the magnets only help to hold the phone better. (More on each compatible phone below)

Our Story
So far in this journey we have gone through dozens of prototypes. Getting the right grip from the pad has been key. We discovered early that the back of the phone needs to be glossy for the phone to stick to the Air Dock. This means that if you have a phone that doesn't have a glossy back you will need to get a case that is glossy. This isn't a problem for most phones, as they are already glossy backed.
We have had great success charging all phones through a case, as long as the case is not overly thick. Normal plastic cases, whether soft or hard work just fine, as long as they are glossy.
The current working prototype has us really excited. Currently there are 6 of this version out in the real world getting used every day by our team of testers. (soon to be another 30 thanks to our "tester" backers!)
Greg, Our founder and CEO:
"I have been building things since I was a kid, and I love it. Building and testing the Air Dock has been a blast. I have used several different 3D printers to make all the different parts as I have experimented with different versions of the Air Dock. There is nothing I enjoy more than having an idea and then turning it into a finished and working product."

At the moment we are using a 3D printer to make a few parts for the Air Dock. The purpose of this campaign is to get a large enough order to have all the plastic parts injection molded and push us over the edge into large scale production.
The electronics of the charger are all sorted and ready for full production. We have already made arrangements with the factory producing them. A large quantity order is ready to be placed as soon as funding is accomplished.
What does the future hold?
We have the current version of the Air Dock perfected. There is no more design or functionality tweaking to be done. All we need at this point is enough funding to afford the high upfront cost of getting molds made for the Air Dock. We are really excited to get this version out there to people just like you!
We have received numerous requests and suggestions for ways to make future versions of the Air Dock better. A few of the ideas that we are considering are:
-
A magnetic version compatible with all phones
-
An NFC chip inside the Air Dock
-
An all black version
We may try to implement some of these ideas into the current model of the Air Dock. It will depend on how much funding we get, and how smoothly everything goes! We are always up for a challenge!
When will I get my Air Dock?
We are planning to have our first production run ship out in April 2014. If we sell out of these perks we will add additional perks for a second production run. This run will probably ship some time around June 2014

Want to know more about your
phone and the Air Dock?
Nexus 5
The Nexus 5 has little metal discs in the back plate of the phone that are placed right around the charging coil. We have magnets inside the Air Dock that align with these discs and pull on them to hold the phone in place. This works great for the black Nexus 5 because it's back isn't glossy and the micro-suction foam doesn't hold as firmly. The magnets instead do the holding.
No matter which version of the Nexus 5 you have it will work great with the Air Dock. It will also work fine through a case, as long as the case is glossy, and not too thick.

Nexus 7
The nexus 7 has the same metal mounting discs in it's back as the Nexus 5. The black version is also just a little bit more glossy than it's Nexus 5 counterpart which helps make up for the extra weight of the Nexus 7.
We have tested the Nexus 7 on the Air Dock and so far it is holding fine. We will continue testing for the Nexus 7 so that it can be used on the Air Dock. We think it's pretty cool that you can mount a full blown tablet on our Dock!

Galaxy S4
If you own a Galaxy S4 you have several options.
-
Option 1 - Buy a Samsung brand replacement back cover for your phone. This back cover will have the wireless charging hardware built in. Once you have the new back cover, place your phone on the Air Dock and it will charge. The disadvantage to this option is that the replacement back cover is thicker than the original. This becomes a problem if you are trying to put your phone back into a hard case. If you don't use a case with your phone, this is a great option. This is also the highest quality receiver you can get. It is highly recommended.
-
Option 2 - Buy an aftermarket wireless charging kit. This kit gets applied right over the battery under the original back cover. This keeps the phone closer to the same thickness so that it will fit more easily into a hard case. We will be testing different brands of these and recommending/supplying the one we find works best. They are aftermarket and are not as high of quality as the Samsung brand back cover. (they are a little bit cheaper though)

Galaxy S3
If you own a Galaxy S3 you have several options.
-
Option 1 - Buy a Samsung brand replacement back cover for your phone.(supposedly this back cover is only available through Verizon wireless for the S3) This back cover will have the wireless charging hardware built in.

Note 2/3
Only certain versions of the Note 2 support wireless charging. Please check that yours does. As of right now we have done little testing on the Note 2. There are aftermarket wireless charging kits available. We are under the impression that there is a Samsung brand back cover for the Note 3, but not the Note 2. We will be doing more reasearch into the Note 2 as the campaign progresses. We will update this as we learn more. Please do your own research to find out if it your phone supports wireless charging.
The Note 3 does support wireless charging. Samsung makes a replacement wireless charging back cover for the Note 3 and we highly recommend this for your phone's receiver. There are aftermarket receivers as well, and we will be testing different brands of these and recommending/supplying the one we find works best. They are aftermarket and are not as high of quality as the Samsung brand back cover. (they are a little bit cheaper though)
iPhone 5/4
If you own an iPhone then you must use a wireless charging compatible case with your phone. The wireless charging hardware is built into the back of the case, and the bottom of the case plugs into the power port for the phone. Once the iPhone is in the case then the phone will charge wirelessly. There are numerous of these cases to be had for both the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 5. If you buy your own please make sure that the back of it is glossy. We will be testing these aftermarket cases and recommending/supplying the one we find works best. They will be available in both white and black for the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4

Accountability
We promise to keep our supporters updated of the progress in production via email. Once we have taken delivery of the first batch of product, video and picture updates of the assembly and packaging processes will be sent. We promise to run a transparent campaign, and will share our successes and challenges with our backers.
Risks and Challenges
We have already contacted the factories that will be supplying the parts, and they are ready for large orders. Of course it's possible to face delays in getting product, but we feel that we have built in a good buffer. Scaling production to match a high demand and a tight schedule is something our team has dealt with numerous times in the professional world. We are ready and excited to take on this new project. We will work very hard to get you an awesome product in an even more awesome time frame.
