The Curator

For five years we've been celebrating "the world that ought to be" as we find it in art, music, film and books—with almost no budget. It's time for us to grow.

Who We Are

When The Curator launched on August 29, 2008 as a web publication of International Arts Movement (IAM), it sought to announce signs of a “world that ought to be” as found in our midst—to be a thoughtful, hopeful journal that would inspire its readers to explore culture that enriches life and broadens experience.

Five years and two editors-in-chief later, The Curator still holds to that philosophy, celebrating the best of new art, music, film and books, as well as taking time to observe daily beauty through poetry and creative nonfiction. We've now published over 800 original essays, more than a thousand blog posts, the work of 230 writers, and averaged 600 readers per day (20,000/month). The site's busiest day saw approximately 5,100 page views.

The Curator's reach is global and diverse. Our writers come from every region of the United States, and some live overseas. They are teachers, poets, doctors, parents, plumbers, designers, students, baristas, store clerks, bouncers, pastors, farmers and philosophers.

Our subject matter might be even more diverse than our writers. In the last two months alone, we’ve covered topics ranging from Picasso, neuroscience, Anna Karenina and Koosh™ balls to Charles Bukowski, baseball, gun violence in contemporary film, Willie Nelson and urban planning.

What We Need & What You Get

After operating on a lean budget for years, we've determined that in order to make the magazine sustainable and "generative," new financial resources are needed. Our plan is to rework our publication calendar, recruit more writers, refresh our content, and establish a budget that will make us solvent for the 2013-2014 year, and beyond.

Our current target is $28,000 per annum. This campaign aims to cover 50% of that, roughly $14,000 + $1,000 in processing fees. The rest of the fundraising effort will be conducted privately through individual charitable donors.
