“The Golem of Havana” is an original musical theatre work being brought to life by a multicultural team of writers, composers, producers and performers, and scheduled to open in New York City’s Ellen Stewart Theatre at La MaMa on August 28th, 2013.
With music by Salomon Lerner, lyrics by Len Schiff and a book by Michel Hausmann The Golem of Havana is a Project in the making, not a wish. For the past few months we have been working tirelessly bringing it to life, securing a space, producing partners and a cast we are proud of.
Our presentations at the Ellen Stewart Theatre are the first stage of our Golem Campaign: the introduction of The Golem of Havana to audiences. Our aim is to continue presenting The Golem of Havana through US and international cities, festivals and returning then to New York City with presentations in a larger venue for an extended run.
The Golem of Havana is happening and we invite you to being a part of its onstage beginning: to be our partner in this adventure.

Althought it is an ambitious production involving the hard work of a team of more than 25 people, we have managed to set a budget of $20,000. This has been possible thanks to the selfless generosity of our team. Per our contract with Equity, we keep our ticket prices low (only $14), and our audience size small (only 99 seats).
For this ten-performance run if THE GOLEM OF HAVANA, we've already raised $10,000. These funds will be used to cover most of the production expenses, including scenery, wardrobe, props, and performers' fees.
We have the goal of raising the remaining half of our budget from Indiegogo backers in two stages.
Stage one: in this first stage our goal is to reach at least $5,000. With this amount, we will break even on our expenses.
Stage two: once we can obtain the working capital needed to make this project come true, an additional $5,000 will enable us to give these talented artists monetary retribution, and help them, to continue with their art.

THE GOLEM OF HAVANA tells the story of a Jewish family living in Batista’s Havana on the brink of the Cuban Revolution. When their maid’s son, a guerilla fighter, is injured, they must choose between protecting him and guarding their new found fragile prosperity: the first achieved since migrating to Cuba after World War II.
This beautiful story combines the historical facts of an era and the traditions of a culture with the simplicity of life in the Caribbean.

For this first season we are planning 10 presentations, at The Ellen Stewart Theatre at La MaMa.This amazing theater is located in the heart of the Lower East Side in New York City (74A East 4th St. New York). Since 1961, La MaMa has been a world renowned cultural institution recognized as the incubator of new work by artists from over 70 nations and cultures.

The Golem of Havana is the product of a long creative process. A combination of traditions, culture, and our own history. Our goal is to bring this story to the stage, and share with our public the magic of its characters, whom we identify with.
But the work does not end here; we are looking forward into the future. Firstly by scheduling more presentations, not only in NY but in other cities, and secondly, by enlarging our budget to improve the production scenery. Thinking big is the way to make this dream come true.
We truly believe that this show can make a huge impact on the audience as well as on the theater community in the USA, since it’s the reflection of a mixture of cultures much like US society.

Risks and challenges
Although $20,000.00 seems like a big sum of money, it is actually a very tight budget. We are already at more than half of the way, as we are pursuing to raise $7,000.00 with the support of Indiegogo’s backers. Our biggest challenge is to produce a high quality play with limited resources. All the members of our team are very motivated with this project, and that gives us a huge plus, so we’ll get the best of high standard professionals in this field.
