The World's First Independently Driven Dual Pinch Wheel Extruder...

The World's Smallest Dual Nozzle Extruder (in all the dimensions which matter)...

One and the same - The Kraken.

Current Status: We at BrainyDeep have been keenly listening to the feedback we have received. We have peeled the Kraken design back to see what is essential and what isn't. We have also sought international sourcing options and requoted for every part on the Kraken. We are currently awaiting sample parts for many of these and hope to release the Kraken 2.0 at a significantly reduced price point. Stay in touch by visiting our website www.brainydeep.com!
Thanks for the attention throughout the campaign!

The Kraken is a revolution in extruder technology for filament based 3D Printing applications. The Kraken’s unique mechanism is the key to enabling the incredible performance and flexibility offered by the Kraken. In fact, we are confident that our extruder is the best extruder available in the world, even in many thousand dollar commercial machines.

The mechanism used by the Kraken enables all of the following features, regardless of configuration:

  • Unique Mechanism with Huge Gear Ratio (20:1)
  • Extrusion rate control – The gearing means each motor step is now smaller than ever before, giving better control of filament deposition rates! We’ve tested down to 0.02mm layers at 30mm/s!! (0.36mm^3/s)

  • Smaller Lighter Motors – Using NEMA 11 motors, only 28mm square, only 140g and only 0.6 amps each!
  • Small Size – 41.2mm wide, ~90mm tall – Print larger than you thought possible on your current chassis!
  • Increasing Tangential Force – Filament force increases with increasing speed, for perfect printing across the widest range of printing conditions. Over 300:1 ratio between the fastest and slowest tested extrusion rates!
  • Step Loss, not Filament Strip – Step loss rather than stripping the filament – step loss will recover, stripped filaments will not - the difference is a minor blemish instead of an aborted print.
  • Suits all filament sizes – Using different filament sizes is as easy as just swapping your J head!
  • Metal design – Machined chassis is compatible with any high temperature hot end designs with a J head mount. Use higher temperatures for exotic printing materials such as Nylon, Polycarbonate and more!
  • Printable Mounts – Maximum compatibility with printers on the market. Currently we have developed and tested mounts for a Prusa Mendel, but we will release the mounting layout for development of all types of mounts, including for mounting accessories (fans, cameras, etc)
  • Bowden Compatible – Can easily be adapted to use as a Bowden extruder.

In addition, the Kraken is 2 extruders in 1!

Dual Pinch Wheel Configuration

In dual pinch wheel mode, both motors on the Kraken are used to drive a single filament, one from each side. This means greater grip on the filament than could ever be achieved before, all but eliminating any chance of stripped out filament and increasing the extrusion force which can be achieved. And what benefits come with high reliability high force extrusion?

  • Print faster - 900mm/s+ extrusion speeds!!  No longer is the extruder the bottleneck for high speed printing. (>100mm^3/s)
  • Print reliably – Filament slip is a problem of the past!
  • Print cooler – High force extrusion means you can print at lower temperatures for faster material setting times and less heat left in the print, perfect for printing without a fan and ooze free prints.
  • Plus all of the Kraken's regular benefits above.

Dual Nozzle Configuration

In dual nozzle configuration, each motor drives a single nozzle similar to traditional extruders, but with all of the benefits of the Kraken’s unique mechanism!

  • M-M-MAXIMUM nozzles – Squeeze more nozzles onto your printer than ever before! 2 Nozzles with a total width of 41.2mm means you can have 4 nozzles in less than the size of 1 Wade’s Geared extruder!!
  • Print Larger – The nozzles themselves are located closer to each other than ever before. This means each nozzle can reach more of the build area, reducing loss of build size when using multiple nozzles! Print up to 26x20cm with 1 nozzle, 23x20cm with 2 nozzles and up to 15x20cm with 4 nozzles on a standard build Prusa Mendel!!
  • Plus all of the benefits of the Kraken's mechanism as listed above!

I've had some questions about the quality of this print - we're still dialling in the tool change G codes - this print was done without temperature changes or a fan on the old nozzle, causing a bit of leaking. Hope to update this as soon as we get a chance!

How does it work?

The Kraken uses a unique mechanism unlike what has been used in extruders previously. Watch the video to find out more!

Compatibility

The Kraken is designed to ease integration into as many existing printers as possible. Currently we have developed complete mounts for reprap Prusa Mendels, and all printers that use the same mounting (2x 8mm rods 50mm apart). The Kraken also has plenty of mounting holes to adapt it to other printers on the market.

Dual pinch wheel mode will work on all printers and boards, provided the current can be adjusted. This is because both motors can be run off a single controller, so even single nozzle electronics will work!

Using more than a single nozzle obviously requires electronics and firmware which supports this, requiring additional stepper driver and hot end connections. The Kraken has been successfully tested with unmodified Gen6 and RAMPS electronics and existing firmware for both dual pinch wheel and dual nozzle printing (RAMPS only, Gen6 only supports dual pinch wheel mode).

We are aiming to providing a basic connection kit, including looms for the motors. This will be targeted at RAMPS and equivalent connections.

See update 2 for more mounting options!

What is the delivery schedule?

The major project activities and durations are as follows:

  • Funding period - 6 weeks
  • Supplier Qualification and Beta Builds - 8 weeks
  • Beta Build Test Phase - 2 weeks
  • Full Scale Ordering - 8 weeks
  • Assembly - 2 weeks
  • Delivery Timeframe - 2 weeks

Based on this rough timeline, everyone should have their Krakens in March 2014.

We are committed to this timeline, and have set it accordingly so that we are not one of those typical crowdfunding projects that promises the world yet delivers a year late. This is the primary reason for finishing all R&D work before seeking funding.

Risks and challenges

The Kraken itself has gone through many design iterations and months of testing to get to this point. The main risk lies in the scale up phase, as we transition designs from our prototype suppliers to larger scale manufacturers. For this reason we are conducting a supplier qualification phase (with short test period) to ensure that the design transfer has been successful. Parts received during the qualification test will be inspected and built up for testing before full scale ordering begins to minimize risk of receiving incorrect batches or materials which aren't up to spec.

What is BrainyDeep?

BrainyDeep is a startup located in sunny/windy/rainy Melbourne, Australia (cross out all that do not apply at this particular instant). Founded by Zbigniew Mioduszewski (aka Ziggy), an engineer with degrees in Mechanical Engineering, Electronics and Computer Science and with years of experience in top end automotive and medical device design.

We are aiming to bring a fresh wave of product development to 3D Printing and utilizing 3D Printing, including digital product distribution. For more info, BrainyDeep's vision can be found on our website at http://www.brainydeep.com/our-vision/

Why Crowdfunding?

Australia is a minefield for start-ups and technology development, with virtually no showing in the manufacturing sector.

This means that obtaining funding via traditional methods is difficult, as shown by the lack of capital raised by Australian startups.

Crowdfunding presents a unique opportunity as our funding is linked purely to market interest. All funds raised are direct from consumers, so only projects that succeed in the market receive funding. And hey, backers get some nice perks too! Promotional pricing, world leading technology ahead of the pack, increased productivity and enjoyment from your 3D printer, and that warm fuzzy feeling of being that crucial part of getting one Aussie’s invention out to the world. Win win!

What next?

Provided the project gets funded, I imagine shockwaves will be spread through the community as all existing extruders will suddenly feel obsolete. It's time to ditch the Wade's!

Please help out in any way you can - fund the project, provide feedback or help spread the word, it all helps!

Make sure the word gets out - the Kraken is coming, straight from the BrainyDeep!
