The Film

The Sound of Ill Days is a humorous drama that follows Teresina, a performance artist who supports herself teaching Spanish at a pre-school, and Patrick, a delusional writer and Twitter addict who works at a bookstore. Over the course of seven ill days, “ill” both in the sense of disturbed and its slang connotation of cool or exciting, their marriage is challenged when new love interests enter the picture. Teresina falls for charming streetwise Camilo, while Patrick pursues a digital love-fueled romance with a girl named after iconic actress Monica Vitti. New sensual appetites are released and notions of internal and external stability are turned upside down.

Inspired by Rojo Robles’ 2007 stage play El sonido de los días perdidos, the film is a re-telling of that play’s absurdist love story with characters living in Brooklyn and experiencing the struggles and joys of city life.

Beyond the love story, the film confronts preconceptions about Puerto Rican and American identity, inter-racial relationships, culture mingling and online addiction. This film is an honest but playful look at the lives of New York artists and outcasts as we have experienced it.

The film was written and will be directed by Rojo Robles and will feature cast members from Caborca and collaborations from emerging musical and visual artists from New York, San Francisco and Puerto Rico.

With: Veraalba Santa, Michael Barringer, Modesto Lacén, Rachael Fox, Marcos Toledo, Libby Osler, Javier Antonio González, Tania Molina, Pedro Leopoldo Sánchez Tormes, George Stavropoulos, Timothy French, Kira Davies, Susannah Hoffman, Laura Butler Rivera, David Skeist and Noah Lethbridge.

Your Contribution

The funding will be destined to finance the shoot in Brooklyn during August 2014. Much of the budget will cover the cost and/or rent of equipment, wardrobe/make-up, catering as well as making sure that every department has the support it needs.

Inspired by the tenets of Dogme 95 and the style of now classic New Wave cinema, we will be shooting only in real or public locations- using natural or minimal lighting. We will embrace improvisation and happy accidents in order to bring realism to the story. Rather than cutting corners, we feel this will only add to the film.

The People Behind

Founded by Rojo Robles and Veraalba Santa, El kibutz del deseo is a multidisciplinary artistic company that began in 2004 in San Juan, Puerto Rico and has been based in Brooklyn since 2010. Over the last decade we have produced plays, performances, short films, musical events and recently started to publish fiction. In 2013, we created a division, This Wave, dedicated to filmmaking.

Can we kick it? Yes, we can!

We have a track record of staged productions, screenings, publications, reviews and successful events both in Puerto Rico and New York and we are very confident in the potential of The Sound of Ill Days to be an exciting film that will participate in film festivals and be distributed.

Your contribution at any level will grant motion to the filmmaking machine. It will brighten up our set and keep us rolling.
