The Fourteen Stations of the Cross 

Laura James’ original artwork will be produced and donated to the Parish of St. Jean Baptiste in Sassier, Haiti.

Framed reproductions of the Stations will also be donated to
St. Gerard Majella parish in Chardonnette and St. Paul parish in Moulines.

Donations will enable Laura to paint the Stations and travel to Haiti to install them in all three churches.

WHO:   

From Here To Haiti, Ltd,  a 501(c)(3) public charity, was formed in 2010 to respond to the increasing need for repair of non-governmental buildings used for public assembly.  www.fromheretohaiti.org

Laura Jamesis a self-taught painter of Antiguan heritage.  Working as a professional artist and illustrator for over twenty years, her sacred art is rendered in the Ethiopian Christian Art style, which she has made her own.  Ms. James is best known for her illustrations in the Book of the Gospels lectionary published in 2000 by Liturgy Training Publications on behalf of the Roman Catholic Church, which achieved a Catholic Press Association 2002 Book Award. The book is used worldwide by numerous Christian denominations. Recently commissioned by The Office of Black Ministry on behalf of the entire Black Catholic Community to create a painting for His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan in celebration of his elevation, Laura's religious art is at the forefront of the movement toward a more inclusive representation of Biblical figures.  www.laurajamesart.com

WHERE: 

The Stations will be installed at St. Jean Baptiste Church, the Parish church which serves 3 chapels, and is currently under renovation. The parish serves about 10,000 people over about 30 square miles in a rural area in southwestern Haiti.

WHEN:   Fall 2013

WHY THIS PROJECT IS IMPORTANT  

Throughout history religious art has allowed us to communicate our perceptions of Biblical figures. But more often than not, Christian art has been depicted from a Eurocentric point of view and so excludes other ethnic groups from seeing themselves as a reflection of the Creator.

In areas affected by poverty where life is typically more physically and economically challenging, the need for spiritual elevation is important.  Our goal is to offer parish members artwork that is more authentic and reflective of their community's valuable heritage.
