Premiering at the Bushwick Starr in October 2013, RoosevElvis ("Rose-of-Elvis") is a duet in which TEAM actresses Kristen Sieh and Libby King tackle two American icons of masculinity: Theodore Roosevelt and Elvis Presley.
More fever dream than biography, RoosevElvis examines gender and appetite—both literal and spiritual—through the story of Ann, a slaughterhouse worker in South Dakota who is awakening to the sense that she is not strictly male or female. The play unfolds through a quintessentially American narrative: the road trip. Performed live and through film, Ann and her lover journey from the Badlands to Graceland, surreally transitioning into Elvis and Roosevelt as they confront contemporary America - its relationship to food, to gender, and to fame.
Why We Need Your Help
The TEAM is thrilled to be headlining the Bushwick Starr’s 2013-14 season with RoosevElvis, which will also mark our 1st-ever World Premiere on American soil! That’s kind of a big deal.
Before we can get there, however, we have to hit the road—I-29 to be exact—to film the show’s central component: a time-fuzzy, surreal road trip from the Badlands to Graceland. Armed with cameras and faux-facial hair, Libby and Kristen will drive an RV, in costume and in character, from South Dakota to Tennessee, filming all the way. Your support will go towards flights, fuel, and film equipment for this gender-bending adventure. In return, we’ll not only send you missives from the road and other goodies, you’ll be one of the first people to see the finished product, wherever in the world you are, thanks to the miracle of Vimeo.
