What is The
Weiner Monologues?
Anthony Weiner was a rising star in the Democratic Party until his
online exploits ended his career. Then he ran for mayor, and it looked like he
would be back on top, until his junk was in the news again.
Using Greek tragedy as a model and the ups and downs of Weiner's
career as an entry point, The Weiner Monologues is a conversation
about the personal and communal in the age of the Internet. Through found
text, live song, dance, video and the use of smart phone technology as a
narative device, TWM goes beyond the headlines and double entendres to the core
of Weiner's escapades.
Also, there's a lot of dick jokes.

A Little More
Background
In the summer 2011, a group
of theater students launched a workshop about the inherent theatricality of
online source material and what happens when these texts mash up on stage as
they mash up in our facebook newsfeed.
Two weeks in, the infamous
Weiner tweet hit the blogosphere and we had the perfect subject to develop a
full-length theater piece of epic innuendo.
Over months of rehearsal, we
cut and spliced the words of pundits, victims, predators, politicians and pop
stars from blogs, newscasts, twitter feeds and maybe a ke$ha into our remixed
version of a Greek Tragedy. We first performed the piece in January
2012 in a university setting. Audiences realized that The Weiner
Monologues did more than recount the headlines of a sex
scandal. It examined our cultural perspective and how it morphs when
filtered by the instant gratification of the internet and our computer screen.
When Anthony Weiner
re-entered the political fray in 2013 as a mayoral candidate, we had a slew of
new material. Cast and audience members alike reached out in the
hopes of remounting the piece. After two years of more sex scandals,
controversies and Miley Cyrus songs, who knows (we certainly donât) what the
re-explored version of The Weiner Monologues will look
like? And that excites us as artists. With a freshened
perspective and dedicated group of creators, weâre ready to revisit the themes
of a piece that was so dear to us two summers ago.
We hope youâll be a part of
it!
