Walking with EB is about the 2008 walking adventure of two new friends, Linda Rae Dornan and Suzie LeBlanc, as they retraced the 1932 walk of the poet Elizabeth Bishop across the Avalon Peninsula in Newfoundland. It was an important journey in each of their lives which has since birthed several projects around Bishop’s poetry, from new videos and a film/video screening to Bishop’s poetry set to new music. They walked, read poetry to Newfoundlanders and themselves, met descendants of some of the people mentioned in Bishop’s journal, and retraced Bishop’s journey with new eyes. Linda carried a rented video camera, documenting the landscape, their experiences and their connection to Bishop’s life and poetry through the walking.
Elizabeth Bishop is a Pulitzer Prize winning poet raised in Boston and partly in Great Village, Nova Scotia (1911 - 1979). Suzie LeBlanc is a soprano and early music specialist, and Linda Rae Dornan is a visual and media artist who each love to walk long distances. In 2008, Suzie invited Linda to retrace Bishop’s 1932 journal and experience something of what the poet had written about. Linda thought she would make art about it with the video camera. And that is how this very personal, kind of quirky and rather charming documentary came into existence.
Hi! I’m Linda. After months of editing, the video documentary is in post-production. It is approximately 35 minutes long. All the costs so far and all the editing has been done, and paid for, by me, stretching my budget and credit. O la la! The film is being included with Suzie’s new CD of Bishop poems set to original music and will be launched in the Fall of 2013. I will also be sending the documentary out to film festivals so it is presently being professionally sound mastered and then will be converted to DCP (Digital Cinema Package). These are the expenses this fundraising effort will help to cover.
It has been an amazing experience to be involved with this poet, albeit through her writing, and to all the people celebrating her life and work. I appreciate you taking the time to read all this and if you can donate, many many thanks.
