Why Are We Developing the WekiPod?

 

THE ISSUE: GROWING PACKAGE THEFT

 

In 2017, over 40 million packages were delivered per day.  With the excitement that comes with receiving the delivery notification, so does the existence of fear and worry for most consumers since many packages are being delivered when no one’s home.

Studies show that 74% of packages are stolen while the homeowner is at work. This results in:

  • loss of money & frustration for the consumer;
  • extra tracking by the carrier to locate the package which means additional man hours; 
  • potential loss of  revenue for the seller due to package replacement and/or loss of a valued customer.  

 

Current solutions highlight theft but do not prevent it.

WekiPod’s Story

"Your Package Has Been Delivered"

WekiPod began with an idea over 3 years ago.  As an avid online shopper, its inventor was tired of worrying about her packages being delivered and possibly stolen while she was at work.  What a bummer! Although the “package delivered” notification brought about excitement and joy, the excitement quickly plummeted because of the instant fear that her package would be stolen, damaged by rain,  or destroyed by a dog that thought the package was a nice toy to bite and tear apart.  Yikes!

The existing options meant that she would either have to drive to a carrier pick-up location to retrieve her package or she simply had to reschedule a different time with the carrier which likely resulted in her missing work.  She decided to solve this problem herself. Hence, the Birth of WekiPod!

What the Stats Say...

Eight in 10 Americans are now shopping online, according to a new study from Pew Research. That’s 79 percent of U.S. consumers who shop on the web or their phones, up from just 22 percent back in 2000 (https://techcrunch.com, Perez).  

According to vanguard.com, over 10 million homeowners had a package stolen in 2016 ("Press Data Sheet on Package Theft & Delivery Stats 2017").  

Per cnbc.com, nearly 1 in 5 U.S. homeowners has been a victim of package theft in 2016, according to a survey by Ring, a home security firm.  Throughout the year half of homeowners report receiving at least one package per week, but two-thirds say that number ticks up around the holidays. 

 

In 2016, 13.6% of the median value of packages stolen was $201-$300.

Consumer Poll - Online Shoppers Speak!

We conducted an online consumer poll in July 2018 that contained 10 questions for consumer feedback.  We gathered responses from over 100 participants.  Although all 10 questions were pertinent to our market research, we selected the 2 most impactful questions to share with you.  The below poll results illustrate the interest and need for a viable package protection option.

 

 

How it works

The WekiPod is designed to keep your packages in, and the ‘porch pirates’ out. Security theft prevention features allow the package to drop down to the Pod base while preventing thieves from extracting it.  WekiPod sits in a uniquely designed theft prevention bracket that is securely attached to your door and can only be removed by the homeowner when necessary. Once the package is secure in the Pod, only you, the owner, can take it out! Simply unlock the security package door and easily remove your package!  

Design Features

  • Package Deposit Door with the "Drop & Go" feature.  This part of the design was well thought out and methodically designed.  We wanted to consider the carrier's delivery process and not interrupt the speediness needed to complete the delivery.  This feature will aid in allowing the carrier to continue a seamless delivery.  No codes needed, no key needed, nothing to impede a speedy delivery.  Simply drop the package in the deposit door and on to the next delivery!
  • Consumer Package Retrieval Door retrieve package at your convenience.  Package will be safe and secure in the WekiPod until you're ready to remove it.  The door will be equipped with a CAM lock.  The consumer can unlock the door without difficulty.
  • Fits Maximum Box Size 12x12x12 will fit small to medium sized boxes.  Parcels can also be delivered with ease.  
  • Door Bracket is an added security feature to keep the WekiPod safe on porch.  This feature was imperative to the WekiPod's functionality.  It keeps the WekiPod safely affixed to the porch to prevent its theft.  No bolts or drilling need.  Door remains unharmed.
  • Portable Pod use it when you need it, easily remove it when you don't.  The Pod will be light-weight and easily attached and detached by the consumer.
  • Durable Body Design to provide structure and security.  This design feature reduces further chances of tampering and it allows the WekiPod to withstand harsh weather and creates product longevity.

If we do not reach our desired goal, then the funds received will be in escrow until the entire goal is met through other resources.

What if we receive above our $5K goal?

If we receive monies above our intended goal, then the extra funds raised will be used to get the WekiPod into production quicker.  The extra funds will go towards manufacturing tooling expenses.

MAKO Design + Invent is a full-service consumer product development firm servicing small product businesses and early-stage invention startups. With a 25-person team across 3 offices (Austin, London, Toronto), MAKO has complete in-house industrial design, mechanical design, electrical design, and prototyping services. 

 

       

     

RISKS & CHALLENGES

Additional Focus Groups Considered

WekiPod's step beyond design is prototyping. Our team based the design on consumer and carrier research.  The challenge that we face is to ensure our design meets the needs of all involved.  You can imagine the difficulty here.  Although we are confident in our design, we do realize it has to consider additional feedback from the consumers and the carriers.  This information  will be gathered through additional focus groups and target marketing.  With this, sometimes slight design alterations are needed.  We don't anticipate huge design changes but realize that we will need to consider the feedback gathered and will make changes if we deem them necessary to increase consumer appeal and carrier buy-in.

Carrier Buy-in

We need carrier buy-in in order to make WekiPod a success.  The carriers are the cornerstone to the delivery process and our business.  However, sometimes when change occurs so does the possibility for resistance.  We understand the sensitive nature of delivering products to customers timely and efficiently and we don't take this lightly.  We also comprehend that incorporating the WekiPod into this process will present certain challenges.  During 2019, we plan to meet with the different carriers (USPS, FedEx, UPS, DHL) to discuss their needs and illustrate how WekiPod will improve the lives of all involved.  We are confident that this challenge, although real, will be a smooth transition in the end.

Anytime you're first to market with an alternative product/service the risks are inevitable.  We are not afraid of these risks but understand that strategic execution is key.  Our team of experienced engineers, marketing, and finance personnel will strive to mitigate the risks as much as possible.  When creating WekiPod, we didn't use our competition or the existing package theft solutions as our benchmark.  Instead we followed a different strategic logic coined by others as value innovation.  With this mindset, we aimed to create a leap in value for consumers.  

 

Forward Thinking

Future Technological Design Features

The WekiPod design will advance over time with the changes in technology.  Our team has kept this in mind while continuing to project future features and continuing to meet consumer's needs.  Like other current products on the market, WekiPod will likely have next generation versions that will offer consumers additional advanced features that will make it more useful.  Those technological advances have already been considered and will result in next generation WekiPods in the future.  We aim to listen to feedback and the market to make WekiPod the best package protection product possible.

 

WHEN DO WE PLAN TO SHIP

We anticipate the first WekiPods will ship late Fall 2019.  We do project to have a second campaign to help us get to production!
