W H I T E   E L E P H A N T

Hi my Name is Sipho Mabona and I'm professional origami artist. I've had the opportunity to show my work in galleries and museums all around the world. My pieces mostly focus on large-scale installations.

Using a sheet measuring 15 by 15 meters (50 by 50 feet), we will create an elephant standing more than 3 meters (10 feet) tall. Further more we will install two cameras which will be feeding footage to an online live video stream, so you, your friends and family can watch us as we fold. 

WHAT WE NEED

Let me quickly sum up what your funding contribution will help us with:

1. The production of a 125 sqm or 2500 sqft sheet of paper

2. The support structure to ensure the sculpture will stand upright.

3. The sealing with acrylic paint

4. The camera that will feed the online live stream showing how I fold the piece

5. The camera documenting the process in time-lapse

6. And off course the helping hands of my three assistants.

If we do exceed our initial funding goal we plan to fold a whole series of life-size origami animals in different galleries and museums around the world. It will be a great experience for us to share with you.

The Impact

I believe that Origami and the W H I T E  E L E P H A N T are so fascinating due to the prevalent belief that the use of only one piece of paper is very limiting. But actually the very contrary is the case. In the art form of origami a simple piece of paper can be transformed into anything imaginable. It’s exactly this transformation, which in my opinion stands for many struggles we have to overcome in life. This project will be a great experience for us to share with you. Hopefully it will change public’s perception of origami and make people realize what a powerful art form it can be.
