The classic tale of a boy in a TARDIS t-shirt standing in front of a girl dressed as the Fifth Doctor, asking her to love him... and a girl demanding to know why she can’t be the Doctor or Han Solo or Captain Reynolds. They’d be star-crossed lovers (Wars and Trek, obviously) but they have so much in common - surely they can find the time and space to fall in love? This is a story about wanting to feel safe, to be appreciated and how far we’ll go to find people like us.

Who Are You Supposed To Be? is our love letter to being a fan of movies and television, a fan of science fiction and fantasy, a fan of being who you are and sometimes pretending you’re somebody else just for the hell of it.

And we’re taking it to Edinburgh Fringe.

We need your help to make it the best show we can.

These characters are fans of Doctor Who, but this is a universal story of two people meeting – two people from other sides of the world finding out they have so much in common, but can’t agree on who would win in a fight between Batman and Captain America.

This fundraiser is to help with three things:

  1. Venue hire – we’ve got a great space at C Venues, one of the largest hubs of theatre and new writing at the Edinburgh Fringe. But being in such a great space requires a little bit of money.
  2. Publicity – we’ve got a great show, with a great hook. Fans of anything or everything will love this show, but we need to tell people about it. We need posters and postcards. Flyers and programmes.
  3. Costumes – we have a couple of particular costumes that we need to get absolutely right. If you’ve ever been to a Convention, you know how good the costumes are. In particular, our main character is dressed as the Fifth Doctor throughout the show. We want to get that costume as close to perfect as possible. The shows hinges on this costume being as close to perfect as possible. Plus, there's a costume that appears in the final scene that also needs that attention to detail, but... spoilers!

And that’s it. We’re going to Edinburgh – and we want to make the show as amazing as we can. Because the better the show is in Edinburgh – it’s a World Premiere – the more opportunity we’ll get to tour the show.

Star Jennifer Lusk will be back in Australia in 2014, and plans are afoot for the Melbourne and Adelaide Fringe festivals – but if we raise over and above our goal, a few more dates in London and the UK over the next twelve months is entirely possible. And it will help Binkaboo Productions get a running start on those Aussie festivals in the next couple of years.

So, if you can't be or won't be in Edinburgh, your donation will help make sure we can bring the show to you.

Check out the rewards we have for you - messages from Edinburgh, signed posters, an annotated version of the script with commentary from the entire team, free tickets for Edinburgh (and 2-for-1 specials when we tour near you). Any generosity will be much appreciated and rewarded as best we can - including our eternal gratitude.

And if the Doctor can tell you anything, eternity is a long time. Thank you!

What was that? You'd like to know a little bit more about us? Ok!

Binka Boo Productions was created in 2006 by Jennifer Lusk, in order to create and perform independent theatre as a platform for independent artists.  BBP’s first production, Fitting Rooms, was also Lusk’s debut script, and was performed at both the Adelaide and Melbourne Fringe Festivals, with a sell out Adelaide season. In 2009, BBP staged the award winning play, A View of Concrete by young Victorian playwright, Gareth Ellis, at the iconic Queen’s Theatre, again as part of the Adelaide Fringe Festival.  In 2012, Lusk developed her short story, Photographing The Dead, into a one-woman show with preview perfomances at development stage in Melbourne and two preview shows in London, before premiering at Paradise in the Vaults during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. BBP is a privately funded profit-share company, with energetic and enthusiastic contributors from the independent theatre scene across Adelaide and Melbourne, and now London.

Jennifer Lusk (producer/performer) graduated from the Flinders University Drama Centre in 2004. She has been present on the independent theatre scene across Adelaide and Melbourne, performing her own work, with her own company, and for other co-ops. Apart from BBP's shows, she has also played Titania for Green Cyc’s outdoor production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and performed at the Malthouse with CEL productions’ Love Victoria. She has also appeared in a number of Short Films, including Fancy, with Liam McIntyre, and has been repeatedly involved in the Short and Sweet Festival in Melbourne, as a writer, a performer and a director.

Keith Gow (writer) is an active playwright and theatre-maker on the Melbourne independent theatre scene. His short plays have been performed across Australia and in South East Asia. With several Short & Sweet Theatre festivals under his belt (Melbourne, Sydney, Malaysia), he has also mounted his one-man show, Richard Di Gregorio: On Time, at both the Melbourne and Adelaide Fringe festivals. After co-founding "The Wooden Leg" theatre company in 2011, Keith has produced two successful seasons of short plays in non-traditional theatre venues, as well as developed his short play Eight Minutes for Short & Sweet Melbourne 2012. His most acclaimed work, Painting with Words & Fire, was produced at Revolt Art Space in Kensington in February 2012. In August, the play received a one-night only reading at Primary Stages in New York City.

Emrys Matthews (director) is from Oxford, and he trained in Acting at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA). Directing credits include: Twelfth Night (The Dell, Stratford Upon Avon), Our Finest Hour (Paul McCartney Auditorium, Liverpool), Macbeth (The Dell, Stratford Upon Avon), Jon and Jen (Sennheiser Studio Theatre, Liverpool), Macbeth (Jaqueline Du Pre, Oxford). Emrys also runs his own Doctor Who blog called "Wonderings In The Fourth Dimension". Emrys' favourite Doctor is Jon Pertwee.

Cameron K. McEwan (performer), otherwise known as "Blogtor Who", cuts an impressive figure on the Doctor Who fan scene and is currently writing a book about the cult show. He will be appearing as Feste in Twelfth Night for Play the Fool as part of the RSC's open air free Shakespeare season. This year, he has also starred in the comedy web series PanCam, in the video sequences of Wireless Theatre Company's transmedia alien invasion epic, Dead London and also in the upcoming British indie flick Love.Honour.Obey. He has also hosted and moderated panels at various science-fiction conventions across Europe with guests such as Matt Smith, David Tennant, Billie Piper, Catherine Tate and Karen Gillan. Cameron also writes reviews, lists and comment for Den of Geek, Cult Box and The Huffington Post. He currently lives in London, with his three trousers.
