What is Young in Prison?

As a non-profit organization, Young in Prison seeks to empower youth ages 16-24 during incarceration and following release through creative arts, sports, and literacy. Young in Prison believes in providing youth the opportunity to positively participate in their community.

Workshops are conducted at juvenile and prison facilities throughout Cape Town serving to integrate life and leadership skills into offenders' daily practice. Similar workshops take place at the Young in Prison service site reaching post-release youth to ensure continued life skills education and support.

Workshops take a holistic approach to positive change by providing youth engagement  with soccer, yoga, job training, interpersonal communication, conflict management, public speaking, poetry, drawing, comic book making, and sculpting.

How can you play a role?

Resources needed to strengthen Young in Prison programming include workshop books, soccer balls, cleats, art supplies, computer software and internet access. As of now, only the workshop facilitators have manuals to guide the workshops. The soccer teams have several soccer balls and none of the players have cleats. And pencils and computer paper serve as the creative mediums for art projects.

With your contribution Young in Prison will be able to enhance programming and provide youth with the resources necessary to establish and maintain a positive lifestyle. Often times we take things such as a soccer ball or internet access for granted without recognizing the immense impact such a commonality could have on one person's life.
