New Jakon Shama campaign video! (the rap version)

Hello and welcome to the Jakon Shama indiegogo campaign!

Australian artist and music producer, Pete Gorrie AKA Yuin Huzami goes deep into the Amazon Jungle to mix modern music production with the ancient healing songs of the Shipibo Tribe.

An introduction:

Armed with little more than a laptop computer and portable microphone, an open heart and a large dose of inspiration, my trip to the Amazon rainforest in Peru to explore the world of plant medicine healing has now begun to fruit into something wonderful that I could never have foreseen prior.

Over the past 18 months I have spent much of my time in the jungle working alongside dozens of Shipibo Master healers (Onaya) and have had the great privilege of recording their songs.

I have captured a great number of their inspired and heartfelt medicine songs, called Ikaros, both in and out of traditional Ayahuasca healing ceremonies. I have since spent much of my time recording and producing music around these ikaros, always keeping them as pure and unedited as possible. The album is now coming together with the 10 chosen songs well under way and boasting a wide variety of different sounds, feels and musical styles due largely to the input of the many incredible musicians from around the world who I have been working with on this project so far.

I will be spending the next few months completing the recordings and arrangements for each song and bringing them all to a rough mix standard. With your help I will then take Jakon Shama into a super nice recording studio in the USA to be mixed, track by track and mastered by a world class engineer to ensure that the finished product is the best it can possibly be. Then with the album mastered and its artwork complete, Jakon Shama will be born into a digi-pack CD and shared with all of our supporters before being released worldwide.

My background:

Over the past 13 years I have written and produced 5 full length albums as a solo artist and within a partnership, recorded with countless artists, I have run frequent songwriting and music production workshops and have had my work featured many other releases and compilations. I love to collaborate and to be recording when the magic is happening and this project is without doubt, by far the most interesting body of work I have ever worked on.

I have learned a great deal from these Maestras and Maestros, and I feel deeply honored to be sharing their energy and love through this music.

Where the funds raised will go:

Every dollar you contribute goes directly toward the creation of this album and getting it out there into the world. This will ensure we are able to go about the following:

  • securing the space, additional equipment and time needed to finish recording and arranging the album

  • hiring top-notch musicians

  • spending 1 week minimum mixing the album in a professional studio in the USA with a world class engineer (there are 3 we are currently considering)

  • having the album mastered professionally

  • making great album artwork with a photographer and graphic designer

  • pressing the first 1000 copies to CD
 as an Eco-friendly Digi-pack

  • covering some of the necessary travel expenses between our home base in Peru, and the USA where the album will be finalised and put into production

  • covering the costs of the perks we're offering (which will also support the Shipibo families we buy them from)

  • And of course covering the fund raising fees

  • If we are able to raise above our target, this money will be invested into the promotion of the album as well as vital equipment needed for future projects of this nature.

Giving back to the Shipibo:

In the spirit of this project I am pledging 50% of profits made from sales of the completed album will be divided between the Shipibo healers who feature on this project and their families (17%), and the non-profit organisation Alianza Arkana (33%), who I know to be doing great work in helping the larger Shipibo community in the Pucallpa region. Please check out their projects and fantastic work at http://alianzaarkana.org/

The “Perks” of supporting this project!

(What we'll send you as thanks for your support)

All of these Shipibo crafts are hand stitched (some taking months per item) by our Maestras and Maestros. These patterns have been shown to them through their plant dietas. When studying to become a Maestra/Maestro they spend many months in dieta, in isolation, connecting with many plants of the Amazon region, in which they receive their ikaros and the patterns which you see displayed on their crafts.

Through my work with the Shipibo and my experiences with the medicinal plants of the Amazon, I too have received much inspiration that has now translated through my art.

This is a collection of some of my latest work. The prints you will receive are approx  11 x 17 inches and are printed on a thick, high quality stock paper.

Meet the Healers:

The Shipibo-Conibo population consists of about 35,000 people living in between 300 to 400 villages located near the town of Pucalllpa which is on the Ucayali River in the department of Ucayali.

I am working with some of the most respected and powerful healers (Onaya) from the Shipibo tribe, many of whom have only previously worked within their communities. All of the Onaya or Maestras and Maestros are experienced, gentle, caring, deeply dedicated to healing and embody the wisdom and sincerity of their people. I am very privileged to be working with them.

More about ikaros:

Ikaros are said to carry messages from Mother Earth through the songs of Amazonian plant spirits transmitted to the shaman.

Traditionally, sound has been used for healing in many cultures. Throughout the indigenous tribes of South America, plant songs are an integral part of the healing process. The Onaya (Shipibo healers) explain that all plants have their own songs and these songs, the ikaros, are taught to the healer during "dietas" – extended periods of time in isolation adhering to strict dietary conditions carried out in order to receive the healing energy and teachings of the plants. The apprentice carries out numerous dietas whilst in training, typically for a minimum of 4 years and then continuing to diet plants throughout their life as an Onaya. These healing ikaros form the backbone of the energy work during ceremonies.

Introducing The Arkana Alliance:

Alianza Arkanas aims are focused on strengthening the position of indigenous communities confronted by industrial scale development by extractive industries in the Peruvian Amazon, particularly multinational oil companies; implementing sustainable, community-based development projects that offer clean and long-term alternatives to destructive development; supporting intercultural educational projects in indigenous communities; preserving the indigenous cultures of the Peruvian Amazon, bringing credibility to, and deepening understanding in the West of the ancient medical and spiritual practices of the indigenous people of the Amazon. http://alianzaarkana.org/
